Principal Electrical Engineer – Power Systems - 629297

Denver, Colorado

Relocation assistance available

U.S. Citizenship required

We are seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer – Power Systems to lead the engineering design of sub-transmission systems, substations, switching stations, and complex commercial/industrial power distribution systems. This role is considered a subject matter expert (SME) in the electrical engineering field and plays a key role in shaping the direction, scope, and resource planning for critical infrastructure projects.

This is a hands-on, high-impact engineering leadership position for someone who brings both technical depth and broad experience across power system projects. While this role does not include direct reports, the Principal Engineer will provide project leadership, engineering direction, and mentorship to junior team members and report directly to the Director of Engineering.

Required Qualifications:

U.S. Citizenship

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) from an accredited university, with an emphasis in power systems

Minimum of 12+ years of experience in the electric utility industry, with at least 5 years in a Lead, Supervisor, or Project Manager role

Active Professional Engineer (PE) license

Recognized Subject Matter Expert (SME) in power system analysis, distribution system modeling, and protective device coordination

Expertise in medium-voltage electrical substations and distribution systems

High proficiency with power system software such as ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, or similar

Experience using Microsoft Project (or similar tools) for project planning and resource estimation

Proven ability to mentor and coach junior engineering staff

Strong analytical, organizational, and multitasking capabilities

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Team-oriented mindset and ability to collaborate with internal teams, external partners, and customers

Key Responsibilities:

Lead and contribute to the design of sub-transmission systems, substations, switching stations, and complex power distribution systems

Serve as a technical expert and resource for engineering challenges across military, municipal, and commercial/industrial projects

Develop engineering calculations, analysis, concept designs, and cost estimates for utility system improvements

Design and manage microgrid systems integrating renewable and fossil fuel generation assets

Prepare and approve engineering reports, system models, and study recommendations using tools such as ETAP

Develop and review electrical system models, validate findings, and lead troubleshooting efforts for fault events and power quality issues

Author electrical specifications for major system components and equipment

Coordinate with construction and field teams, conducting site walk-downs, and providing support through project execution

Maintain in-depth knowledge of power system protection, relaying schemes, and applicable codes and standards

Stay current with utility and electrical industry regulations and ensure project compliance

Provide technical guidance and oversight to junior engineers, supporting their development and contributing to project success

Collaborate with clients and stakeholders to ensure optimal system design and long-term reliability

Additional Details:

Role is based in Denver, Colorado with relocation assistance available for qualified candidates

Travel to client sites may be required, particularly to military bases, which function like small cities and require complete electrical infrastructure

Projects include design, development, and maintenance of power distribution and substation systems, as well as consulting engagements for external clients

The company values well-rounded engineers who have worked across the full range of power system design—not just in isolated areas like substation or relay protection

Engineers from highly segmented organizations are encouraged to apply if seeking broader project ownership and impact
