Job Summary:

Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the health room at the assigned school. The building nurse is responsible for promoting wellness and preventative health maintenance while providing health care and assistance to students and staff. This position is a 189 day, 7.5 hours/day position

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Associates Degree in Nursing

Valid Registered Nurse License

Valid PA Driver's License

Two (2) to three (3) years prior healthcare experience

Certification in CPR, AED and First Aid

Proficient with Microsoft Office and Google (My Drive/Shared Drives)

Possess a professional, friendly attitude

Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with students, staff, parents/guardians, healthcare providers and district residents

Must be able to multi-task with frequent interruptions Required Clearances/Pre-employment Steps:

PA Child Abuse Clearance Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Bachelor's Degree in nursing

Five (5) years or more experience in the acute care or education setting Primary Duties:

Provides acute care/first aid and general healthcare to students and staff on a daily basis.

Provides emergency care for the sick and injured during school hours.

Coordinates state mandated health screenings, which include height, weight, vision, hearing, and computing body mass index (BMI) as required.

Maintains up-to-date health histories, screening results, immunization records, and any medical changes/updates in student health records.

Assesses and interprets the health and developmental status of students and communicates this information to parents.

Maintains communication with parents/guardians regarding health concerns which may affect student's learning, results of screenings, mandatory health examinations, or any acute illness of injury incurred by a student in the district's care.

Makes referrals to appropriate agency/doctor when indicated and implements follow-up procedures.

Plans educational health programs for students, faculty/staff, and parents.

Compiles and maintains a confidential list of students who have special health problems and provides orientation to faculty/staff on the special needs of students as needed

Dispenses medications as prescribed by physician and according to Board policy and maintain an accurate medication roster.

Compiles information at the end of school year for annual state health report.

Manages care of medically fragile students and dispenses medications, nebulizer treatments, peak flows, blood sugars, catheterizations, and other treatments.

Maintains a daily log of visitors to the Health Room and charts student information as required.

Participates as a member of the Student Assistance Team.

May be required to lift students, assist students with toileting, and accompany students on field trips when parents or other staff may not be available.

Acts as a consultant to parents and staff for related health issues and makes referrals to the certified school nurse and principal when warranted.

Maintains a record of all pupil and employee accidents and submits a copy to the District Office. Secondary Duties:

Performs additional job-related duties as directed by the Director of Student Services, Principal, Assistant Principal, Supervisor of Special Education, Certified School Nurse, or district office administrator.

Attends health services department meetings and staff professional development as required.

Works with the school counselor(s) providing or referring information on students as needed.

Human Relations / Contact and Communications:

Frequent interaction with school age children and youth. Infrequent communication with student population parents or caretakers. Will work with building personnel and indirectly report to building principal for day-to-day tasks and performance.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

The working conditions for this position are in a health room setting with inside environmental conditions. This position will require most of the daily movement walking through the health room, triaging several patients across multiple health room(s) settings.
