Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Controller on an Interim basis to lead financial operations and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements in support of a Higher Education institution. As a key member of the finance management team, the Controller provides leadership across a range of functions, including accounting, payroll, budgeting, compliance, and financial reporting. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on detail oriented with a strong understanding of governmental accounting standards, internal controls, and higher education finance.
Key Responsibilities: Oversee general operations including accounting, payroll, cash management, and financial aid transactions, and ensure compliance with GASB standards and internal controls. Prepare financial reports for state and federal bodies and coordinate audits and regulatory filings. Supervise, train, and evaluate staff while maintaining cross-training for backup personnel. Plan and monitor the office budget. Ensure the accuracy, security, and functionality of financial systems. Establish and update accounting policies and procedures to ensure compliance with laws and regulations.Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. CPA certification preferred (or ability to obtain Maryland CPA license within 6 months). Experience: 3+ years as a Controller (preferably in higher education). 2+ years managing general ledger accounting operations. 4+ years of supervisory experience. Skills: Knowledge of GAAP, GASB standards, strong ERP systems experience, ability to lead diverse teams, proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, and exceptional communication and organizational skills.
