Field Service Technician
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Service Manager
TRAVEL: Required up to 100%
WORK SUMMARY:
This role involves servicing, repairing, and operating a variety of CNC machine tools. Responsibilities include using precision test equipment to analyze, troubleshoot, and repair complex mechanical and electrical issues. The technician will work with CNC controls from multiple manufacturers and coordinate the successful installation of machine tools. Strong collaboration with customers, vendors, OEMs, and internal personnel is essential. The ability to independently manage service calls, assist other service engineers and maintenance technicians, and perform general scraping and fitting of machine tool components (if applicable) is highly valued. This position also requires troubleshooting and repairing electronic circuitry down to the component level.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Dismantle and prepare machines for shipment
Perform machine leveling and alignment
Diagnose and repair major machine tool issues
Disassemble, repair, and rebuild machine tool assemblies and sub-assemblies
Organize, tag, and mark components for future reassembly
Identify, repair, or replace damaged components
Perform first-time power-up and troubleshooting of machines
Conduct servo system tuning
Accurately report activities and expenses in a timely manner
Train employees for advancement and customers on CNC control system operation
Troubleshoot and repair advanced electronic circuitry
Maintain communication with customers, vendors, OEMs, and internal teams
Keep work area neat, clean, and organized
Travel frequently, often on short notice
Work independently with minimal supervision
Perform other duties as assigned
REQUIREMENTS:
Advanced knowledge of machine tools and terminology
3+ years of experience in machine tool field service
Associate’s degree in electronic engineering or a related field (experience may be substituted for education)
Strong understanding of mechanical systems and components
Familiarity with multiple machine tool specifications and test equipment
Proficiency with mechanical hand tools and a personal toolbox
Intermediate knowledge of parametric programming and ladder logic
Basic knowledge of hand and power tools
Experience with Renishaw Ballbar and Renishaw Laser Calibration equipment (preferred but not required)
Ability to perform final scraping and fitting of machine tool components (preferred but not required)
Working knowledge of applications processes and programming
Reliable transportation
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Intermediate computer skills
Advanced troubleshooting abilities
In-depth understanding of CNC controls and functions
Ability to stand for long periods, frequently reach, bend, and stoop
