SUMMARY/SCOPE:

The Dean of Students is responsible for contributing to arobust Student Life program by championing co-curricular opportunities forstudents. The Dean is knowledgeable about today's students and facilitatesmeaningful avenues for involvement, engagement and transformation that aredemonstrated by a vibrant Student Life program. The Dean not only serves as apoint of information for students and responds to the needs of students, butalso partners with faculty to help students adjust, learn, and thrive in theeducational environment. The Dean has oversight of the judicial system andthreat assessment efforts and leads the development of policy and protocols.The Dean of Students works under the supervision of the Vice President forStudent Life and is a key position in shaping the future of Hardin-SimmonsUniversity culture.

HSU JOB FAMILY CLASSIFICATION INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: These examples do not include all possibletasks & do not limit the assignment of related tasks.

Provideleadership to and management for the following areas: Residence Life, StudentEngagement, Student Services, Global Engagement andUniversity Counseling Services.

Encourages professional and personal development ofstaff, including the development and accomplishment of objectives and actionsconnected with mission.

Fosters a collective effort to positively shape thestudent experience - an education enlightened by faith.

Provides guidance for a residential system thatincludes almost 1200 residents and programming.

Ensures holistic student programming to buildcommunity and lifelong relationships through appropriate developmental andeducational initiatives.

Leads efforts to integrate family in studentpersistence.

Oversees fiscal responsibilities related to the supervisedareas.

Orchestratethe student judicial process, including updating and directing universitypolicy.

Develops a judicial program based upon institutionalvalues. Administers student disciplineand trains judicial hearing officers.

Advocates for college students and involves them asappropriate in divisional decision-making processes. Counsels with students and parents asneeded.

Reviews, revises, and implements university policiesrelated to student life. Oversees updating of the university student handbook.

Serves as the student grievance officer for allnon-academic issues.

Worksin partnership with Academic Affairs to develop, implement, and evaluatecurricular and co-curricular programs that integrate faith and learning.

Overseesthe Threat Assessment Team (TAT) and works collaboratively with UniversityPolice on issues of safety.

Servesas the facilitator of the Student Care Team.

Serveson various committees as assigned.

Overseesmarketing plans, publications, and website design/content for Student Life.

Serve as advisor for Student Government Association.

Provides direction for staff that oversee studentactivities, social clubs, and other campus organizations.

Oversees the planning and implementation of newstudent orientation programs (Cowboy Connect & Stampede).

Serve as Deputy Title IX Coordinator.

Adheres to guidelines in the University Personnel& Safety Handbooks and departmental policies.

Assists Vice President with strategic planning forStudent Life, including the implementation of the University master plan (whichincludes the design and construction of additional residential facilities) andthe development and implementation of the Student Life strategic plan.

Performother special tasks, projects and duties as assigned by the Vice President ofStudent Life.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervisesdirectors and/or assistant directors for Residence Life, Student Engagement,Student Services and Global Engagement, and University Counseling.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES (Language, Mathematical, Reasoning and Computer Skills):

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general businessperiodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmentalregulations. Ability to write reports,business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively presentinformation and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients,customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest,commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebraand geometry.

REASONING ABILITY: Abilityto solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables insituations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret avariety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

COMPUTER SKILLS: Toperform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of WordProcessing software; Spreadsheet software; Project Management software; andability to learn university specific software programs.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Master's degree required; Doctoratepreferred.

Fourto ten years related experience and/or training is required.

Previous customer-service oriented work, including theability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students,parents, alumni, faculty and/or staff.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This is an Exempt/Salaried, Full-Time Staff Position. Working beyond a normal 40-hour weekis a definite including occasional nights and weekends.

Must have and maintain a valid Class C Driver's License andmaintain a clear driving record to be insurable under the university liabilitypolicy.

Must be able to drive to complete work assignments on andoff campus, as needed.

Occasional travel and irregular hours are required attimes.
