Automation Controls Engineer

Job Description

Position Summary:

We are looking for a Senior Controls Engineer who is technically skilled, customer-focused, and able to lead automation projects from concept to commissioning. You’ll be responsible for programming, integrating, and troubleshooting control systems for custom-built machines and automation systems. This role requires close collaboration with mechanical engineers, electricians, and customers to ensure successful project delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

Develop and implement PLC and HMI programs (primarily Rockwell, Omron, Mitsubishi; Siemens experience a plus).

Design and troubleshoot machine electrical systems.

Work collaboratively in clean-sheet design efforts with mechanical and other controls engineers.

Lead specification, procurement, and installation of all electrical components for custom machines.

Program and integrate robots and vision systems (general knowledge preferred).

Configure and troubleshoot servo motion systems.

Create and modify electrical schematics using AutoCAD Electrical.

Provide on-site support during machine startup, debug, and customer runoff.

Offer occasional customer support and service as needed (discussed further during the interview).

Travel as required (mostly local, some international travel possible to customer sites).

Qualifications:

5+ years of experience in controls engineering or automation systems.

Strong proficiency in PLC/HMI programming, especially with Rockwell, Omron, or Mitsubishi platforms.

Experience with robot programming and integration preferred.

Working knowledge of servo systems and industrial vision systems.

Proficient in machine electrical design and troubleshooting.

Experience using AutoCAD Electrical.

Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Ability to manage projects independently from concept through commissioning.

Willingness to travel locally and internationally, as needed. (about 25% travel!)
