Summary:
To support the educational process for students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing by assuring accurate communication occurs between the students and their teachers, hearing peers, and other school personnel. The main role of a captionist shall be to provide educationally and linguistically appropriate captioning and printed notes of lectures and discussions in assigned classroom and other educational settings.
Essential Functions:
Provide real-time speech-to-text services during classes and/or meetings for students by summarizing content in a meaning-for-meaning style
Use and maintain computer captioning equipment and related software programs to record class lectures, tests, films, assemblies and discussions for students and/or to record small and large group meetings for deaf/hard-of hearing students in public school settings
Provide edited notes in printed or electronic form to students, taking language levels and comprehension into account
Prepare for classes by reviewing materials and adding relevant subject matter vocabulary to the captionist dictionary
Serve as a communication link between regular education teachers and teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing, while maintaining confidentiality about student’s behavior and progress in all situations
Improve knowledge of and skill in captioning through participation in workshops, in-services, and seminars.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands. The employee is frequently required to walk; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee may be required to stand for long periods, and to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time, 185-day calendar position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday. Hours are dependent on the needs of the districts. Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
Travel:
May be required between assignments and reimbursed in accordance with current IRS rate.
Education and Experience:
Minimum: High School Diploma or equivalent
Associate's Degree or beyond is recommended with experience
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Typing speed of at least 50 words per minute
Will train qualified candidate(s)
Successful candidates must provide evidence of C-Print Captionist Training Program
