JOB SUMMARY: The Medical Technologist is responsible for performing high-complexity laboratory testing and analysis in a hospital setting, supporting patient diagnosis and treatment. This role involves working in multiple laboratory areas, maintaining quality standards, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and collaborating with physicians and healthcare teams to provide accurate and timely test results. Reports to Laboratory Director. Non- Exempt position.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Laboratory Testing & Analysis

o Perform diagnostic testing in hematology, chemistry, blood bank, microbiology, urinalysis, coagulation, and serology/immunology.

o Analyze patient samples using automated and manual methods.

o Validate and report accurate and timely test results for patient care.

o Conduct molecular and infectious disease testing as needed.

o Correlate laboratory findings with patient conditions and consult with medical staff when necessary.

Quality Control & Regulatory Compliance

o Perform quality control checks, instrument calibration, and proficiency testing.

o Ensure adherence to hospital, CAP, CLIA, Joint Commission, and OSHA regulations.

o Identify and troubleshoot discrepancies in test results, implementing corrective actions as needed.

o Maintain proper documentation for audits and inspections.

Equipment Operation & Maintenance

o Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments, analyzers, and diagnostic equipment.

o Load reagents and verify instrument functionality before testing.

o Conduct routine and scheduled instrument maintenance and documentation.

o Report equipment malfunctions to biomedical engineering or vendor support as needed.

4. Blood Bank & Transfusion Services

o Perform blood typing, antibody screening, and compatibility testing for transfusions.

o Verify donor and patient blood compatibility following hospital transfusion protocols.

o Monitor and maintain hospital blood product inventory, ensuring availability for emergencies.

o Inspect blood products for contamination or expiration and discard as required.

5. Microbiology & Infectious Disease Testing

o Process and analyze cultures, gram stains, and identification of bacteria, fungi, and parasites.

o Detect and report hospital-acquired infections and antibiotic resistance patterns.

o Follow proper specimen handling and biosafety procedures to prevent contamination.

o Identify and document reportable infectious diseases per health department guidelines.

6. Communication & Reporting

o Notify physicians and nursing staff of critical lab values in a timely manner.

o Accurately document test results in the hospital's electronic medical record (EMR) and LIS.

o Work collaboratively with medical teams to support accurate patient diagnosis and treatment plans.

7. Safety & Infection Control

o Adhere to hospital infection control policies, including PPE and biohazard safety measures.

o Properly handle, store, and dispose of hazardous materials and biological specimens.

o Participate in hospital-wide safety drills and emergency response training.

8. Phlebotomy & Specimen Collection (As Needed)

o Assist with venipuncture and specimen processing as required.

o Verify patient identity using two patient identifiers before specimen collection.

o Ensure proper labeling, handling, and transport of specimens within the hospital.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Certification o Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field.

o At least one national certification required (ASCP, AMT, or equivalent).

Experience o 1-3 years of experience in a hospital or acute care laboratory environment preferred.

o Proficiency in hematology, chemistry, blood bank, microbiology, coagulation, and serology/immunology preferred.

o Experience using Meditech Expanse preferred.

Skills and Competencies

o Strong knowledge of clinical laboratory testing and methodologies.

o Ability to troubleshoot instrumentation and testing discrepancies efficiently.

o Excellent attention to detail and adherence to quality control measures.

o Strong communication skills for interaction with medical staff and interdisciplinary teams.

o Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced hospital environment, including emergency and trauma situations.

FUNCTIONAL DEMANDS

Functional Job Requirements:

Job requirements include, but are not limited to: sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, bending, squatting and reaching. Requires good finger dexterity, repetitive motions with hands and fingers. Requires ability to have good vision and hearing. Pushing and pulling equipment may be necessary.
