Primary Purpose
Generate and deliver precise, accurate, and timely test results on clinical specimens for waived, moderate, and high complexity tests as outlined by CLIA. Testing areas encompass hematology, microbiology, chemistry, urinalysis, serology, virology, phlebotomy, and more. All tests are conducted in compliance with CLIA regulations, as well as state and OSHA requirements. Conduct necessary quality control checks, maintain equipment, and document all actions appropriately. Additionally, manage clinical lab inventory and perform various administrative duties as assigned.
Essential Functions
75% Clinical Laboratory Testing
Produce and report timely, accurate, and reliable test results in waived, moderate, and high complexity tests as defined by CLIA.
Follow established procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
Assure that all specimens and requisitions are labeled with all required information so that the requested test(s) are performed on the correct patient specimen.
Use independent judgement to recognize abnormal and/or critical test values and make decisions regarding the need for retesting and/or confirmatory testing.
Perform and monitor quality control on test systems/equipment as required. Review results and report accordingly.
Perform preventative maintenance and troubleshooting on all equipment as necessary. 10% General Lab Duties
Successfully participate in required proficiency testing and competency evaluations.
Process specimens in a timely manner and in the appropriate way for testing in house or for sending out to a reference lab. This must be in a manner which will preserve the integrity of the specimen.
Monitor inventory and expiration dates of supplies and reagents regularly and request necessary supplies in a timely manner.
Monitor and record temperatures.
Maintain weekly, monthly, and quarterly checklists for the clinical lab.
Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
Notify the Medical Lab Supervisor I and/or Medical Lab Technologist I of critical values, instrument or test malfunction, etc.; otherwise, responsible for final review of own work before releasing results.
Decontaminate work surfaces and reusable supplies as necessary and dispose of biohazardous materials and sharps appropriately.
Answer questions from patients and other staff regarding lab policies and procedures, testing, etc. 10 % Phlebotomy
Blood drawing on adult, adolescent, and pediatric patients that come into the lab for testing.
Techniques include venipuncture and capillary puncture using standard phlebotomy supplies and equipment.
All techniques must be performed abiding by OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen regulations.
Explain and reassure patients, and guardians if patient is pediatric, about the phlebotomy procedure.
Collect blood specimen in a timely manner and in the container appropriate for the test to be performed. 5% Additional Support
Fill in at the Havelock clinic as assigned by the supervisor and transport specimen, mail, supplies, etc. to the CCHD New Bern office at the end of the day.
In the event of a disaster, may be required to assist as needed.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor and/or management.
Minimum Education and Experience
Associate's degree in medical technology from an appropriately accredited institution or completion of a certified laboratory assistant course in medical technology or a comparable course, and one year of medical laboratory experience; or high school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of medical laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience in high complexity testing (microbiology and hematology) preferred. ASCP, CLS, HEW, or an equivalent certification or eligibility is required.

Craven County provides eligible employees with $50.00 per week in disability insurance through OneAmerica AUL. Employees have the option to purchase additional disability insurance at their own cost.
North Carolina Local Governmental Employees' Retirement System
Eligible employees are automatically enrolled in the retirement system and must contribute 6% of their gross salary each pay period. Once eligibility requirements are met, employees will be able to receive monthly payments for life based on their salary, age, and years of service credit.
NC401k
Craven County contributes 2% of eligible employees' gross salary into the 401(k) account regardless of the employee's deferral amount. In addition, the County matches employee deferrals up to an additional 3%.
Annual Leave
Regular full-time employees earn annual leave based upon years of service. Eligible employees begin to accrue annual leave as soon as they start but must complete a six month probationary period before they are eligible to use annual leave.
Less than two years of service earns 10 days per year.
Two but less than five years of service earns 12 days per year.
Five but less than 10 years of service earns 15 days per year.
10 but less than 20 years of service earns 18 days per year.
20 or more years of service earns 20 days per year. Sick Leave
Regular full-time employees earn 3.69 hours of sick leave per pay period. Craven County accepts eligible sick leave from the State of North Carolina, any of its political subdivisions, any local government entity or authority, or municipality in North Carolina.
Paid Holidays
County employees receive 11-14 paid holidays annually. The Board of County Commissioners may adjust the holiday schedule as deemed necessary.
Longevity
Eligible employees earn $200 in longevity after five years of service by October 31 of the qualifying year. Longevity benefits increase $25 per year up to a maximum of $1,000.
Merit Program
Craven County offers a merit program. Up to 56% of eligible employees may receive a performance-based merit increase each year.
