Mechanical Design
· Create 3D models of parts and assemblies using Autodesk Inventor, with a focus on:
o Functionality, safety, and cost-effectiveness
o Design for assembly
o Design for manufacturability
o Ease of maintenance
· Create detailed 2D drawings of parts and assemblies with appropriate geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
· Perform mechanical Finite Element Analysis using Autodesk Inventor’s built in tools as well as Autodesk Nastran
· Perform mechanical strength, deflection, kinematic, and fatigue calculations to evaluate the effectiveness of designs.
o Use scripting programming languages like The Python Programming Language to automate these calculations
· Generate and maintain Bills of Materials (BOM) for all mechanical assemblies and release them to Purchasing for material procurement
· Create and document the sequence of operations for each machine project
· Actively participate in design review meetings, offering technical input and improvement ideas
· Provide ongoing support to the shop floor and controls teams during machine build and commissioning
· Provide technical support and documentation for the service team
· Identify opportunities for design improvements and cost reductions, and implement approved changes
· Assist assembly and controls personnel with mechanical design-related inquiries or challenges
· Collaborate with external vendors to resolve drawing and design questions
· Write technical documentation for mechanical components
Quality
· Support and contribute to Thielenhaus Microfinish Corp.’s quality system and continuous improvement initiatives
· Maintain and follow engineering procedures to ensure compliance with internal standards
· Ensure all departmental activities meet legal requirements and uphold the highest ethical standards
ERP System
· Create and maintain product and bill of material records
· Create and maintain manufacturing order records
· Create and maintain quality and product lifecycle records
· Monitor and complete tasks assigned in the project management module
Required Qualifications:
· Experience performing product design
· Knowledge of manufacturing processes related to machining and grinding
· Able to create 2D drawings and 3D models of parts and assemblies using computer aided design software from the list below:
o Autodesk Inventor
o Solid Edge / NX
o Solid Works / Catia
o Creo
· Basic understanding of machine and process control components as they apply to mechanical designs
· Excellent organizational skills
· Strong communication skills
· Must be able to lift and move up to 10 pounds
· Four year Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, General Engineering, or equivalent degree
· Must be on-site to perform job duties
· Proficiency in selecting and specifying Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
· Experience with electromechanical system design
o Ball screws and linear guideways
o Servo motor sizing and selection
· Strong understanding of pneumatic systems
· Understanding of lubrication techniques
· Solid foundation in fluid mechanics
Preferred Qualifications:
· Experience in the machine tool industry
· Experienced creating mechanical drawings & designs for applications in manufacturing processes
· Knowledge or experience with grinding or micro finishing operations for metallic parts
· Experience design and selecting components for high precision machinery
o Bearing and linear guide configuration
o Thermal growth
o Hydrostatic bearings
o Balancing and modal analysis
o Linear and rotary feedback scales
o Bearing and assembly pre-load for zero backlash
· Experience using Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD
· Experience performing Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA)
· Familiarity with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools and methods
· Programming experience with The Python Programming Language
o Experience with other programming languages or technical programming software (like MATLAB) is also suitable
· Autodesk Vault software: product data management and product lifecycle management
