Description:

Provide process and metallurgical expertise in support of engineering and prediction efforts for friction welding applications and development.

Responsibilities

Evaluate potential applications for friction welding

Research and develop new processes

Determine weld parameters and machine settings based on materials and joining geometry

Ability to prepare and perform metallurgical samples and assess metallurgy

Make recommendations to engineering or the customer for component redesign to optimize friction welding design

Determine material and equipment requirements for development and production jobs

Prepare proposal and quotations for feasibility, development, sample and production welding

Communicate effectively with internal and external customers and be the technical contact for all weld development and production efforts

Evaluate quality and when applicable, apply known problem-solving methods to determine how to modify the weld process parameters, part design, or materials to achieve the desired results

Prepare technical documentation for new programs or product launches including the PPAP documentation, Control Plans, Risk Assessment, FMEA, and other related supplier documentation.

Determine the need for post-weld processing

Develop concepts and design tooling

Provide technical support to all internal and external customers

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Welding Engineering and/or Materials required. Advanced degree preferred.

2-3 years in an engineering or technically oriented role directly related to friction welding or some solid-state joining process.

2-3 years as a Process Engineer, or similar technical role, related to process definition, development and improvement

Direct experience in material joining, material properties and/or material characteristics, strongly preferred.

Knowledge related to DFM (design for manufacture) and DOE (design of experiments) methodology
