Summary

The Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach will directly supervise the performance training program of assigned Olympic sports teams. The mission will be to contribute to the wellness of Cadet-athletes, assist Cadet-athletes in optimizing competitive performance, and contribute to the readiness of Army West Point Athletics Cadet-athletes. Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to programming for individuals and groups on daily strength, speed, and conditioning performance and health (on-site and during travel); translating the latest scientific evidence into practical sports performance recommendations; tracking and documenting outcomes of training programs, maintaining health and safety of all cadet-athletes and strength facilities. This is a professional position, and all duties of the position must be conducted in adherence with the policies, rules, and regulations of the United States Military Academy ("USMA"), Army West Point Athletics Association Inc. ("AWPAA"), applicable conferences and the NCAA.

Scope of Impact

This position coordinates the sports performance plan for Cadet-athletes as a member of the multidisciplinary sports medicine & performance team, working with coaches, sports performance, and sports medicine. This position is responsible for coordinating the strength, speed, conditioning, and recovery of Cadet-athletes. This position is responsible for creating and administering proactive performance training plans for Cadet-athletes and coaches in order to maximize performance. This position is critical to the success of the Sports Performance program and will comply with the rules and regulations of all governing bodies (e.g., USMA, NCAA, Conference). The Assistant Strength Coach must possess highly professional mannerisms, unimpeachable moral and ethical character, and be a role model.

Level of Decision Making

The responsibilities outlined in this job description are integral to the success of the AWPAA. This position is responsible for identifying goals for individuals and teams in their sports performance training program, assessing progress towards established goals, adopting scientific approaches to reaching those goals, planning and delivering instructional/training techniques, using relative data to evaluate cadet-athletes programming, and reflect on performance to determine future direction. This position also coordinates with coaches, athletic trainers, and sports dieticians and advocates for Cadet-athletes' performance, health, and safety across USMA.

Success in this position will be evaluated by the Supervisor on the employee's performance in a variety of areas, including but not limited to: Commitment to AWPAA Mission, Vision and Values; and supporting the AWPAA Strategic Plan and Priority Results.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Primary Teams Assessment & Analysis (45%):

Designing annual sports performance program for primary teams to include strength, speed, and conditioning.

Oversee the analytics to include Polar, Forcedeck analysis, Norbord, wellness questionnaires, and performance testing.

Maintain all information on cadets-athletes.

Working in collaboration with all High-Performance units, develop and lead the implementation of a comprehensive strength and conditioning plan for the Cadet-athletes that optimizes the impact on the holistic development of student-athletes.

Provide daily, weekly, and monthly training reports.

Collaborate with nutritionists on nutritional strategies.

Design strength and conditioning protocols for injured athletes.

Travel with primary team for all away competitions.

This position frequently communicates with cadet-athletes, coaches and staff who have questions related to proper technique and plans for physical development. Must be able to exchange accurate information with cadet-athletes, coaches and staff.

Must be able to observe and assess physical movement and other sports performance concerns in coordination with the other members of the high performance and sports medicine team.

Secondary Team(s) (30%):

Designing sports performance programs for assigned secondary sports to include strength, speed, and conditioning.

Oversee the analytics for (TBA) to include Polar, Forcedeck analysis, Norbord, wellness questionnaires, and performance testing.

Working in collaboration with all High-Performance units, develop and lead the implementation of a comprehensive strength and conditioning plan for the assigned sports that optimizes the impact on the holistic development of student-athletes.

Provide daily, weekly, and monthly training reports.

Collaborate with nutritionists on nutritional strategies.

Design strength and conditioning protocols for injured athletes.

25% Other Duties

Assist with scheduling, maintenance, supervision of weight room.

Work in collaboration with USMA to help schedule summer training.

Maintains Strength and Conditioning certification and acquires/maintains other required credentials, continuing education requirements and contact hours.

Assist with mentoring of cadets.

Assist with cleaning and organizing the strength facility.

Maintains CPR/AED/First Aid Certification.

Stays abreast of current sports performance and analytic methods.

Conducts self in a manner that demonstrates adherence to standards of professional performance.

Utilizes effective written and oral communication skills to promote and maintain effective working relationships with all significant parties.

Abilities to set priorities, meet multiple deadlines, analyze problems, develop and implement effective solutions.

Work Conditions & Physical Requirements

Must be able to remain in a stationary position for 40% of the time.

Must be able to lift heavy objects up to 75lbs.

Ability to move self and supplies from various locations to support physical development of Cadet-athletes in various facilities.

Consistently operate computer and other productivity machinery, such as calculator, copy machine, computer printer and inventory systems.

Consistently works in outdoor weather conditions when providing direct support and training at outdoor practice and competition facilities.

Perform duties during flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays as required by the athletics schedules.

Travel

May be required as part of an athletics event and practice schedule, regionally and nationally. May include overnight travel and can be up to 15% of annual time.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited university.

SCCC or CSCS Certification.

CPR/AED/First Aid certificate.

Minimum of 2 years' experience coaching at the collegiate or professional sports team levels.

Proficient in Microsoft Excel.

Must have exceptional skill to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

General knowledge and willingness to follow NCAA, USMA, Patriot League and other governing bodies' rules.

Demonstrate good judgment, intellectual curiosity and the ability to respond quickly and deal successfully under pressure. Leads by example with high personal expectations, character, and appropriate advocacy for the department.

Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and prioritize assignments and work independently to complete assignments despite various deadlines, competing requirements and changing priorities.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in exercise physiology / Sports Science / or related field preferred.

SCCC Certification through the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association.

Experience with volleyball, swimming, and/or soccer.

Experience with Catapult/Polar or other GPS systems.

Two years' experience in statistical analysis and data visualization.

Programming Languages-R, Python, SQL, MatLab

Experience with data analysis and visualization using Microsoft applications including Excel and PowerBi.

Additional Eligibility Requirements

Must be eligible to work in the United States of America, without sponsorship.

Must be eligible to work on a military installation, including a willingness to submit to a background screen.

Must possess a valid driver's license.

Pay Range

$42,000 to $45,000

AWPAA expects to hire for this position near the middle of the range. Only in truly rare and exceptional circumstances, where an external candidate has experience, credentials or expertise that far exceed those required or expected for the position, would AWPAA consider paying a salary or rate near the higher end of the range.
