TITLE: Reading Specialist at Stevenson Elementary (K-3)

REPORTS TO: Building Principal and Chief Student Growth & Development Officer

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Regular, Exempt

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university

Appropriate State of Ohio teaching certificate/license

OG Certification (Required)

POSITION SUMMARY: This one-year position will mostly service reading intervention for students with disabilities using the Orton Gillingham (OG) reading program (under the guidance of the Intervention Specialist). Additional components may include reading support in the classroom; servicing Reading Intervention Plans (RIMPS); and/or working with students in small groups who need additional reading support.

INSTRUCTION AND LEADERSHIP

Establish a safe and comfortable environment for all students, including the establishment of reasonable guidelines and appropriate consequences for behavior

Continuously assess student achievement in order to design and differentiate instruction

Develop and implement individual education plans (IEPs) according to State and local policies and procedures

Prepare clear and timely lesson plans that implement the student IEPs

Provide appropriate intervention for students who exhibit deviant behavior

Properly care for students who require personal care such as toileting, diapering, and feeding

Coordinate instruction, to the highest extent possible, within the district’s approved courses of study

Administer standardized and criterion referenced tests according to district policies and procedures

Make effective use of resources and materials that implement the student IEPs and are appropriate for the students disability and skills

Keep accurate and detailed records according to Special Education and building guidelines

Prepare adequate lesson plans and instructions for substitute teachers which outlining classroom expectation and building procedures

Observe the daily building schedule, including starting and ending times for teachers and students, and perform assigned duties

Serve as a role model for students in the practice of ethics, responsibility, and democratic values

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Be available for education related purposes outside the instructional day when requested to do so and under reasonable terms

Serve on committees and participate in school related activities in a professional and responsible manner

Complete an individual professional development plan according to procedures adopted by the district

Learn and implement the administrative procedures associated with the teaching assignment; for example, applying for a field trip or conducting a fundraiser

COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION

Communicate regularly with classroom teachers, support personnel, and other appropriate staff, using approved procedures and forms

Effectively and clearly report to parents in a regular manner and at intervals established by the district and/or building

Communicate with agencies, authorities and private practitioners, according to confidentiality guidelines and other district procedures

Use sound judgment, tact, and diplomacy when interacting with students, parents and the community

Maintain the confidentiality of information that is not public domain

Work cooperatively with peers, administrators and support staff

OTHER

Assist with the selection of textbooks and other teaching materials

Work with student teachers, if assigned

Supervise a paraprofessional or aide, if assigned

Maintain appropriate personal appearance and hygiene

Observe all safety and health regulations of the building and district

Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal, the Superintendent or his/her designees
