Assistant Principal (1 Year Interim Position)

Joyce Middle School

The incumbent will serve as interim Assistant Principal at Joyce Middle School for one (1) school year and will report to the Building Principal. This position will provide administrative support to the building principal in the areas of Curriculum & Instruction, Staff Supervision & Evaluation, Building Operations, Student Discipline and Engagement. This position will focus primarily on academics, data, and assessment.

Qualifications and Skill Set:

Master’s Degree or higher from an accredited college or university.

Appropriate Licensure as a Principal/Assistant Principal by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) Endorsement.

At least three years’ minimum experience as a teacher or related service provider in a secondary school setting, with evidence of strong leadership ability.

Effective communication and problem-solving skills.

Role and Responsibilities:

Assumes leadership of the school in the absence of the principal.

Collaborates with the principal to establish and maintain rules and procedures for student and staff safety.

Effectively implements school and district action plans in crisis and emergency situations.

Exercise direct responsibility on implementation of Joyce Middle School’s instructional vision and priorities.

Participates in curriculum development activities that align with school and district goals.

Collaborates with District leadership, Curriculum Coordinators, and teachers in order to assist the principal in the development, revision, and evaluation of the curriculum.

Assists in identifying, planning, and implementing professional development programs that align with instructional vision and priorities.

Use data to monitor student progress.

Manages academic calendar.

Collaborate on the MTSS implementation process.

Assists the Principal with the administration of the MCAS and ACCESS test.

Participates in Special Education Team meetings when deemed appropriate.

Demonstrates positive and supportive interactive skills and facilitates the development of good collegial relationships among staff.

Collaborates with the principal to develop and maintain positive staff morale.

Coordinates staff payroll and absences with the Human Resource department.

Assists the principal in organizing and supervising school-related activities.

Maintains high visibility and accessibility in the school.

Shares responsibility with the principal for discipline and school culture and implements the school’s vision and priorities.

Collaborates on the educator evaluation system and assumes responsibility for some evaluations of teachers and other building staff.

Assists the principal on hiring and other personnel decisions.

Assists the Principal with communications to stakeholders: students, parents, teachers and the community.

Engages in relevant professional development activities.

Represents the principal at professional meetings and community events in the principal’s absence.

Performs other related duties as assigned by the Principal.
