An electrical estimator analyzes blueprints and project specifications to calculate the cost of an electrical project, determining the required labor and materials needed to complete the work, and then generates a detailed price estimate for the client, ensuring accuracy and competitiveness in bidding for the project.
Key responsibilities of an electrical estimator:
Blueprint analysis:
Thoroughly review electrical blueprints, drawings, and project specifications to understand the scope of work, including wiring layouts, power requirements, and equipment needs.
Material calculation:
Estimate the quantity of electrical materials required for the project, such as wire, conduit, fixtures, panels, and other components, considering project specifications and local codes.
Labor cost estimation:
Determine the labor hours needed to complete the project based on the complexity of the work, crew size, and electrician skill levels.
Cost breakdown:
Prepare a detailed cost breakdown, including labor, materials, overhead, and potential contingencies to generate a comprehensive project estimate.
Bid preparation:
Create a competitive bid proposal for the electrical project, including pricing, project timeline, and terms and conditions.
Site visits:
Conduct on-site inspections to verify project details, assess site conditions, and identify potential challenges.
Software proficiency: Familiar with Accubid/LiveCount is a plus
Utilize electrical estimating software to accurately calculate costs, generate reports, and track project details.
Client communication:
Collaborate with clients, architects, and contractors to discuss project requirements, address questions, and negotiate contract terms.
Code compliance:
Ensure all electrical work adheres to local building codes and industry standards.
Required skills for an electrical estimator:
Technical knowledge: Strong understanding of electrical theory, wiring practices, and electrical codes.
Blueprint reading: Ability to accurately interpret electrical blueprints and schematics.
Math skills: Proficiency in basic math calculations to accurately estimate quantities and costs.
Estimating software expertise: Familiarity with electrical estimating software tools.
Communication skills: Effective communication with clients, contractors, and other stakeholders.
Attention to detail: Ability to carefully review project details and identify potential issues.
PREFERRED:
7 years of relevant experience: electrical AND estimating experience, or combination of both
