As we continue to expand, we are looking for an experienced and dynamic Controller to join our finance team.
Position Overview:
The Controller will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of financial management and accounting functions within the company. The ideal candidate will possess in-depth knowledge of construction accounting practices, including project costing, revenue recognition, internal controls, invoicing, payroll, sales tax and accounts payable. The Controller will play a key role in financial analysis and reporting, working closely with leadership to provide valuable insights that drive the business forward. This role requires strong leadership, organization, and communication skills to effectively manage the accounting team and support overall company operations. The Controller will be responsible for implementing improvements to financial processes, reducing the accounting close cycle time and for enhancing the quality and value of financial information that is proactively provided to members of management and business owners.
Key Responsibilities:
Construction Accounting Expertise:
Oversee and manage all aspects of construction accounting, including job costing, revenue recognition, and progress billing. Responsible for the efficient management and accurate execution of the financial accounting close process and for meeting all related close and reporting deadlines.
Project Costing & Revenue Recognition:
Ensure accurate tracking of project costs, including labor, materials, subcontractors, and overhead. Work with operations and construction managers to ensure proper job cost accounting and recognition of revenue in accordance with accounting standards and industry best practices.
Internal Controls & Compliance:
Establish and maintain internal controls to ensure the integrity of financial reporting, validity and accuracy of financial transactions, safeguard company assets and compliance with all relevant regulations.
Invoicing & Progress Billing:
Oversee the invoicing process, including progress billing and change orders Ensure timely and accurate submission of invoices to clients, maintaining proper documentation for billing and sales tax compliance. Manage and monitor accounts receivable and lead collection activities to maximize cashflow and minimize risk.
Accounts Payable Management:
Manage the accounts payable and receivable processes, ensuring timely and accurate invoice processing, cash application and payment to vendors, subcontractors, and other stakeholders.
Financial Reporting & Analysis:
Prepare and present weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports including key operational metrics. Provide insightful financial analysis, highlighting key trends, actual and anticipated variances, and opportunities for improvement. Collaborate with senior leadership to support decision-making, business measurement and planning.
Team Leadership & Development:
Lead and mentor a team of accounting professionals. Foster a culture of collaboration, continuous learning, and professional development within the finance team. Take the lead on proactive improvement and documentation of accounting policies and processes across all finance and accounting functions within the business. Ensure appropriate cross-training of team members and continued skill development occurs.
Software & Technology:
Utilize and manage construction accounting software, including Foundation Software (preferred), to ensure effective financial management and reporting. Stay updated on industry trends and software innovations to continuously improve efficiency and your value to the business.
Sales / Transaction Privilege Taxes
Perform accurate calculation of state and local sales tax on construction invoices based on the nature of the work, contract terms, exemption certificates, work location, and the types of materials and services provided. Develop a thorough understanding of sales tax laws and regulations pertaining to construction services in the jurisdictions in which we operate.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in accounting or finance.
A minimum of 3 years of experience as Controller for a construction firm with annual revenues more than $20 million, with a strong understanding of construction industry practices and regulations. A minimum of 10 years of progressive accounting experience.
Experience and proficiency in industry standard construction accounting platforms. Experience with Foundation Software is a strong plus.
Strong knowledge of accounting principles, including GAAP, project costing, revenue recognition, and internal controls.
Exceptional organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
Strong leadership abilities, with experience managing and developing a team.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
