Primary Purpose of Position:
The Curator of Interpretive Resources is responsible for guiding the development, refinement, and presentation of the historic objects collection and provides support to the Director of Curatorial Services in creating section goals, providing program planning guidance, strategic direction, and project management. The Curator of Interpretive Resources also oversees the Collections Branch that is responsible for providing specialized consultation to historic sites consisting of advising on acquisition, identification, research, and care of objects in and coming into the state’s collection.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Supports the Director of Curatorial Services by collaborating on the development of section goals; offers guidance on program planning and strategic exhibit direction. In addition, this role is responsible for managing various interpretive projects to ensure that curatorial initiatives align with the overall mission and objectives of the division.
Oversee the activities of the Collections Branch by overseeing daily operations, ensuring efficient processes and compliance with relevant policies. Direct the Branch in developing strategies to optimize the storage, care, and interpretation of the artifact collection.
Serve as a member of exhibit development teams for the Division; participate in planning statewide exhibit priorities; work with exhibit teams to develop interpretive goals; review storylines and assist the Collections Branch and site staff to select appropriate artifacts for exhibition.
Stays current with interpretive trends as they impact interpretation by attending relevant workshops and conferences, reviewing scholarly literature, and engaging with professional networks to ensure that interpretation remains relevant, accurate, and engaging for all audiences.
Position/Physical Requirements:
The work schedule for this position is Monday-Friday 8am - 5pm.
Must have the ability to exercise significant judgement in applying and interpreting policies.

Qualified candidates must have or be able to:
Experience in organizing, facilitating, and/or coordinating programs.
Thorough knowledge of curating for exhibition development.
Working knowledge of artifact and collection management.
Working knowledge of methods and/or techniques in interpretation.
Working knowledge of North Carolina, Southern, and/or American history with concentrations in material culture and/or decorative arts.
Working knowledge of museum ethics, principles, laws and/or standards.
Management Prefers:
Experience in exhibit development.
Thorough knowledge of current methods and techniques of interpretation.
Thorough knowledge of artifact care and collections management
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution

This Unit oversees the organization and management of artifacts for twenty-seven historic sites with the North Carolina Division of State Historic Sites and serves as the deputy director of curatorial services.
