Role Description

The Model Maker constructs precision prototypes and engineering samples according to specifications and requirements provided by engineering teams. Working with 3D CAD models, blueprints, and sketches, this role utilizes a variety of toolroom machinery, rapid prototyping (RP) and CAD/CAM/CNC methods to fabricate parts, tools, and fixtures. In addition to traditional fabrication techniques, the Model Maker is proficient in metal and plastic additive manufacturing including the setup, operation, and post-processing of metal and plastic 3D printed components. This includes Selective Laser Melting (SLM), Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), Stereolithography (SLA) and Polyjet depending on the project. The Model Maker monitors part quality and conformance, escalating potential non-conformances as needed. They collaborate with engineers to provide feedback on part manufacturability and help ensure project deadlines are met.

Main Responsibilities

Build engineering samples and functional prototypes following design specifications and requirements.

Operate and maintain an assortment of machinery (e.g., CAD/CAM/CNC, conventional toolroom equipment) to fabricate parts, tools, molds, jigs, and fixtures.

Read and interpret CAD models, blueprints, sketches, and test standards to ensure accurate prototype construction.

Conduct dimensional or visual inspections of parts and assemblies to verify quality and conformance to specifications.

Maintain safety procedures, reporting any concerns or risks, and following established protocols.

Collaborate with engineering teams to provide input on part design feasibility and improvements.

Assist with documenting procedures, test methods, and work instructions as required.

Qualifications

Working knowledge of blueprint reading, wiring diagrams, and basic instrumentation.

Experience setting up and operating CAD/CAM/CNC and conventional toolroom machinery.

Able to use comparators, micrometers, calipers, indicators and other inspections tools.

Familiarity with electro-mechanical troubleshooting.

Proficiency in MS Office applications for documentation and recordkeeping.

Effective communication skills and ability to work both independently and within a team.

The ability to lift and handle parts or equipment (e.g., compressors, motors, sheet metal).

Nice to Have

Exposure to rapid prototyping machinery and processes including metal additive manufacturing.

Experience in creating jigs, fixtures, and molds.

Vocational or technical training in HVAC or a related field.

Experience with inspection equipment such as digital vision systems, 3D scanning and CMMs.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Additional vocational/technical training or apprenticeship preferred.

The base salary range for this position is $50,000 to $80,000. Actual salary offer may vary based on work experience. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
