The Recycle Department Manager is responsible for overseeing the safe production of high-quality recycled resin that meets customer specifications while ensuring cost-effectiveness. This role involves managing all aspects of the Recycle area to achieve results in safety, quality, reliability, cost, productivity, and employee engagement. Key responsibilities include identifying and implementing procedures to enhance department productivity and efficiency, managing daily production schedules, equipment maintenance, and inventory. The Manager will also lead department training initiatives and analyze data from daily transactions. Collaboration with the leadership team is essential to support plant objectives and safety programs.
Key Responsibilities
This role encompasses in-bound scrap from point of receipt to rating, organizing, and feeding of the production with the right materials to provide the highest and best quality pellets for all the plants to use.
Safety and Compliance:
Promote workplace safety daily
Lead or participate in incident and accident investigations to foster a safe culture
Set housekeeping standards and conduct daily audits to ensure compliance
Establish and maintain 6S principles
Production Management:
Oversee Recycle Raw Material Coordinator to address incoming quality issues and address with Purchasing
Identify and prioritize the production department’s work needs
Effectively communicate work needs to other operational support functions (e.g Shift managers, Maintenance, Quality, etc.)
Review the daily production schedule to efficiently plan job changes, introduce new items, and coordinate sample run requests
Determine the most efficient way to schedule production for recycled PE Resin to meet priorities and minimize scrap
Team Leadership:
Promote teamwork and cooperation between all Department Managers and Production Shift Managers
Verify and ensure production orders, paperwork, and data entries are accurately followed while maintaining desired production rates
Consistently enforce company policies and procedures while maintaining a supportive work environment
Inventory and Maintenance:
Drive inventory accuracy for scrap material and supplies to maintain sufficient quantities to meet business needs
Maintain and organize scrap raw material in outbuildings
Participate in scrap physical inventory cycle counts, as needed
Initiate work orders and ensure adherence to operator maintenance procedures
Assist the maintenance team, as needed, with regular preventive maintenance (PM) tasks
Collaboration:
Work closely with Plant Management, HR Generalist, and Production Shift Managers on personnel issues, job assignments, and staffing requirements
Adhere to budgeted headcount numbers
Participate in coaching sessions with associates
Training and Development:
Write and modify work instructions and Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), as needed
Oversee Sorting and Recycling training
Develop and implement training programs to enhance employee skills and knowledge
Continuous Improvement:
Lead brainstorming and problem-solving meetings
Track and monitor progress on projects
Develop and lead efforts to achieve cost reduction targets
Employ best practices to identify and implement improvement opportunities
Analyze and summarize data generated from operator reports, scrap and resin reports, SITSUM, scrap and downtime
Comply with Quality Management System requirements and consistently audit procedures
Support:
Assist, as needed, and verify shift production reports in cooperation with Production Shift Managers
Support Product Shift Managers in approving time and attendance and assignments within the department
Plan and implement action plans to react to negative trends in the data
Navigate and utilize ERP System Functions (Epicor), as needed
Perform additional duties as assignment by management
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position will oversee the Recycle Raw Material Coordinator, Resin Coordinator, four Shift Managers, and Process Tech Specialists
Education
College degree or 7-10 years supervisory experience in manufacturing
Experience
2-5 years’ experience in post-consumer resin recycling
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Operational working knowledge of wash lines, conveyors, and extrusion
Tenacity to follow plans and troubleshoot problems to resolution
Track record of achieving safety, scrap, production, and quality goals
Working knowledge of managing an expense budget
Dedication to continuous improvement – ability to create and implement projects
Strong Excel skills, ability to chart, graph and analyze quantitative data
Skilled at reading work orders, blueprints, and schedules
Strong and effective leadership with the ability to motivate a team
Forklift certification
