HVAC and Utilities Distribution Technician
Pay Range: $39.78 per hour
Required License: Minnesota 1st Class “B” License
Shift: Days
Job Summary:
This position is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and safety of HVAC systems, utilities distribution systems, and the Building Automation System (BAS) across the plant. Duties include preventative and corrective maintenance, emergency response, and oversight of high-pressure steam boilers, chillers, and related equipment in the Central Plant. The role also involves assisting other Facilities Services personnel as needed.
Qualifications:
Extensive knowledge and experience with steam boilers, chiller plants, and HVAC systems.
Familiarity with building automation systems and troubleshooting of system components.
Proficiency with water/chemical treatment programs and pneumatic/DDC controls.
Strong troubleshooting skills for mechanical and electrical systems.
Ability to read blueprints and schematics.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
High school diploma or GED.
At least 5 years of experience in the operation and maintenance of HVAC and utilities distribution systems.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform routine preventative and corrective maintenance on HVAC and utility systems, including those in the Central Plant.
Respond to service requests and work orders, ensuring completion in a timely and accurate manner.
Conduct safety checks and testing on sprinkler and fire pump systems.
Maintain cleanliness and orderliness in mechanical rooms.
Assist contractors, vendors, and Facilities Services with projects, including distributing keys and issuing hot work permits.
Safely operate boilers and chillers, ensuring efficient and effective performance.
Monitor and manage water treatment systems daily.
Use the Building Automation System to adjust building conditions, electrical demands, and gas usage.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Reporting Relationships
Reports to the Director of Energy Management/Chief Engineer.
Collaborates with other Facilities Services personnel as required.
Preferred Qualifications
Post-secondary education or training in HVAC, refrigeration, building controls, or related fields.
Experience working with HVAC systems and utilities in a higher education setting or similar environment.
Familiarity with food service/kitchen appliances, fire suppression systems, and pipe fitting.
Minnesota Chief Class “B” License.
Licensing and Certifications
Successful completion of a criminal background check.
Valid MN Driver’s License or equivalent.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Ability to work in noisy environments and perform physically demanding tasks (lifting over 50 pounds, working at heights over 20 feet, kneeling, etc.).
Must be able to work outside in extreme weather conditions (rain, snow, heat, etc.).
Must be available for overtime, occasional night, and weekend work during peak seasons.

Additional Information
This is a full-time, non-exempt position requiring a minimum of 40 hours per week, 12 months a year.
Opportunity for promotion to Assistant Chief Engineer, which includes a $3/hr pay increase, at the discretion of the Director of Energy Management/Chief Engineer.
