THE POSITION

The GIS Administrator leads the City’s Geographic Information Systems (GIS) efforts, shaping data-driven solutions that empower departments with spatial insights. This role oversees the design, maintenance, and enhancement of GIS applications, ensuring seamless integration across various systems. With a strategic mindset, the GIS Administrator manages geo-spatial data and applications, leads system implementation projects, and fosters innovation in mapping technologies that enhance operational efficiency and decision-making across the City.

In addition to guiding technical staff, this position plays a pivotal role in shaping long-term GIS strategies, supporting departmental objectives, and ensuring compliance with enterprise data standards. The GIS Administrator also manages vendor relationships, project budgets, and training initiatives to maximize the impact of GIS capabilities citywide.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The City seeks a visionary GIS expert who thrives on innovation and collaboration. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker with extensive experience in ESRI GIS products, GIS database management, VertiGIS Geocortex Essentials, NearMap orthogonal software, ArcGIS Online Cloud, GIS app development, spatial analysis, and a good understanding of the networking necessary to provide reliable GIS services and apps. Implementation knowledge of the ESRI Utility Network Model will help the candidate standout. They possess strong leadership skills, capable of mentoring technical staff while overseeing complex GIS projects.

The successful candidate is detail-oriented yet adaptable, capable of balancing technical expertise with a customer-focused approach to meet diverse departmental needs. A problem-solver at heart, they have a track record of optimizing GIS workflows, integrating new technologies, and driving enterprise-wide GIS initiatives that enhance city operations. Strong communication skills, coupled with expertise in system administration and GIS best practices, will be key to success in this role.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in geographic information systems, geography or a closely related field OR, equivalent related work experience; and at least six years of progressively responsible experience in designing and developing complex GIS databases, systems and applications, at least two of which were at a project management or supervisory level; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

ABOUT THE TECHNOLOGY SERVICES DIVISION

Technology Services is responsible for the centralized design, maintenance, security and support of the City’s communication infrastructure, computer network, telephone/radio systems, and applications to ensure the continued viability and sustainability of citywide technology assets, including computer hardware, software, networks, telecommunications, and audio/visual equipment.
