DNCHC Del Norte Community Health Center

The Gardens & Food Resources Coordinator is responsible for general maintenance, oversight, development, and sustainability of Open Door Community Health Centers’ (ODCHC) community and demonstration gardens and food pantries. The Gardens & Food Resources Coordinator is responsible for knowing about organic food production methods, available community food resources, basic eligibility requirements for accessing community food resources, and have basic knowledge of local, seasonal, and healthy eating practices. The Gardens & Food Resources Coordinator works with staff, patients, and community members on projects and initiatives to improve food security and food access education for patients and community members. The Gardens & Food Resources Coordinator collaborates with other Member Services staff to disseminate food access information to clinic care teams, creates informational resources to promote basic gardening and nutrition education, and identifies ODCHC patients for garden and food resource referrals and participation as appropriate, as well as coordinates with other community agencies as applicable to conduct related community outreach and leverage partnerships.

Compensation Range:

$25.00-$29.03

All new hires will begin at the base/starting wage of this position.

Hmong and Spanish speakers who successfully pass a language exam will receive an additional .75 hourly differential to their wage.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintains and develops ODCHC gardens, food pantries, and other applicable projects.

Coordinates staff and community involvement in ODCHC gardens and food resource projects.

Able to direct volunteers, while also utilizing this engagement as an opportunity for an educational experience

Coordinates with ODCHC staff, community partners, and others as appropriate to identify patients/members for project participation.

Maintains directory of available community food resources and access criteria. Disseminates information to staff and patient/members as appropriate.

Attends clinic staff meetings to share program information.

Attends meetings/trainings and reviews literature to maintain a current knowledge of community food resources and programs and to promote ODCHC food resource projects as appropriate.

Coordinates with agency staff and community partners for publicity and outreach initiatives to promote availability of programs to patients and the community.

Supports digital outreach and sharing of food access and related health and wellness resources on ODCHC Gardens Social Media Channels and collaborates with the Communications Department on media projects and special events promotion

Proposes program initiatives for increased program sustainability.

Assists with grant project deliverables and tracks project data as appropriate.

Adherence to ODCHC attendance policy.

Other duties and responsibilities as designated by supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPECTATIONS:

Ability to assess and prioritize projects across several sites.

Ability to work both independently- planning, organizing and implementing work, and collaboratively with all agency staff.

Ability to identify and differentiate needs of patients/members and provide assistance and stimulate interest in accessing opportunities to increase and promote food security.

Ability to utilize various garden machinery, garden tools and light carpentry skills in a safe and efficient manner

Basic knowledge of local, seasonal and healthy eating practices and ability to educate patient/members around those practices

Ability to communicate effectively and exercise sound and responsible judgment.

Excellent interpersonal skills, written and verbal. Ability to establish constructive working relationships with all levels of management and employees in a staff of varied and diverse backgrounds.

Ability to handle difficult or confrontational situations in a calm, consistent, and equitable manner.

Ability to effectively present information to staff, patients, and the community.

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

Ability to effectively represent the ODCHC’s interests in the community; maintaining effective working relationships among public, private and professional groups.

High school diploma or GED.

Minimum of two years’ experience in community gardens/farming.

Minimum of two years in project coordination of staff/crew.

Minimum one year experience in a medical clinic or social services environment preferred.

Bi/Multilingual preferred.

Experience with maintaining and coordinating multiple gardens or commercial farming experience preferred

SUPERVISION AND SUPPORT: The Gardens and Food Resources Coordinator reports directly to the Supervising Member Services Specialist but works alongside all levels of the Member Services Department.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical requirements described are representative of those needed to successfully perform the essential duties of the position. Reasonable accommodation will be made to allow otherwise qualified candidates to perform these functions.

Ability to traverse both indoor and outdoor environments.

Work environment varies in temperature, sun exposure, and weather.

Ability to bend and/or kneel for an extended periods of time.

Ability to reach above shoulder-level, and to squat, bend, sit, stand, and negotiate uneven ground.

Speaking and hearing proficient to communicate effectively by phone or in person, at normal volumes.

Vision adequate to read correspondence, computer screen, forms, etc.

Good manual dexterity.

Ability to use keyboard and view computer screen for extended periods of time.

Repetitive motion—hands, arms, and shoulders.

Ability to lift 25lbs and lift/or move 50 pounds.

Must possess a valid driver’s license and reliable means of transportation.
