About the role
The Director of Finance supports IAE's mission-focused work by providing executive leadership, strategy, and management of IAE's financial and accounting operations. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Finances works closely with IAE's Board, Deputy Director, Branch Director, and program directors to ensure accurate accounting of IAE's finances, and strategic guidance on IAE's financial management with a respectful, constructive, and energetic style guided by the mission and values of the organization.
This is an exciting time to join IAE and our Finance Team. We have recently transitioned to Sage Intacct accounting software from QuickBooks Desktop and established a new fund structure with our board. This is an excellent opportunity to join an organization and help build new accounting policies and procedures from the ground up that takes advantage of our new platform and establishes a solid financial understand from which we can continue to strategically grow our organization.
Principal Job Functions
Executive Leadership and Strategy:
Collaborate with the Executive Director, Deputy Director, and the Board to develop and monitor short-to-medium-term financial plans, aligning with organizational growth targets.
Foster a strong working relationship with the Board, presenting and gaining approval for strategic organizational initiatives as a valued member of the leadership team. Regularly present financial data and analyses to the board to assist them in their fiduciary oversight role
Identify areas of strategic improvements, on a periodic basis, to the organization's accounting structures, practices, and policies to enhance accountability, clarity, cost recovery, and strategic understanding of our financial position and budgets. Lead implementation of those improvements.
Engage and maintain relationships with other executive staff and program directors. Serve as primary conduit between the Management Team and the Finance team. Team Management:
Provide daily supervision, mentorship, and professional development of finance team staff. Conduct annual performance reviews and collaborate with staff to identify professional growth opportunities.
Manage the finance team; create and maintain a collaborative, team-oriented culture that ensures quality, timely outputs and job satisfaction.
Oversee the functioning and relationship with the accounting software provider (Sage Intacct) and other financial and payroll service contractors (e.g., ADP). Financial Reporting and Management:
Develop and maintain internal financial-management policies, procedures, and performance measures for effective financial control. Ensure compliance with financial, accounting, and regulatory standards.
Aid the team in navigating the accounting and reporting complexities and nuances of different types of grants, contributions, contracts and agreements with federal agencies, state agencies, foundations, nonprofit organizations, sponsors, etc.
Supervise and oversee the Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, and Payroll functions to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory standards. Complete reconciliations of bank, credit card, investment and other accounts.
Manage investment portfolios and funds in accordance with board-established policies.
Maintain tracking of fixed assets, depreciations, and prepaid expense amortization
Lead and facilitate annual budget development and presentation
Develop and submit annual Negotiated Indirect Cost Rate Agreement proposals and reports.
Prepare and present monthly and quarterly financial statements and analysis for the executive staff and board review.
Oversee the annual single audit and act as the primary point of contact for the external firm. Qualifications
Essential Skills and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in accounting, business, or related field
8 or more years of finance experience, preferably in a director-type role in a nonprofit organization
Expertise in GAAP-basis accounting and 2 CFR 200s
Experience working in a nonprofit organization; familiarity with nonprofit accounting requirements
Grant management, tracking, and reporting experience, especially with federal government grants and other grants, agreements and restricted funds
Experience managing and leading accounting staff and developing/implementing accounting processes and procedures; proven collaborator working across organizational departments
Experience presenting to executive leadership and boards
Experience managing and coordinating several projects and tasks simultaneously
Excellent organizational and communication (written and oral) skills
Strong attention to detail
Proficiency with Sage Intacct or similar accounting platform; proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and Google Suite
Collaborative team member, positive attitude, and ability to work with a diverse staff
Ability to respect confidential information Desired Skills and Experience:
Master's degree and public accounting experience
CPA or other professional licenses or certifications related to the role
Director or controller-level experience Physical Challenges:
Must be able to lift and/or move items weighing up to 20 pounds
Must be able to complete tasks in an occasionally noisy environment with frequent interruptions
Ability to remain in a stationary position, often sitting or standing for prolonged periods
