Shape Your World
At Alcoa, you will become an essential part of our purpose: to turn raw potential into real progress. The way we see it, every Alcoan is a work-shaper, team-shaper, idea-shaper, world-shaper.
At Alcoa, we’re reinventing the aluminum industry with innovation, integrity, and a commitment to sustainability. Join our diverse and collaborative team at the Alcoa Technical Center (ATC), where your expertise will help develop groundbreaking technologies like ASTRAEA and ELYSIS—paving the way for a cleaner, more efficient future.
About the Role
As a Multiphysics Modeling Engineer, you will play a critical role in advancing our next-generation aluminum production and recycling technologies. You’ll use advanced modeling techniques to simulate complex physical processes, support experimental design, and accelerate innovation. In this role, the Multiphysics Modeling Engineer will:
Numerically model physical processes using a range of modeling techniques ranging from deriving new and/or fundamental equations to using commercial Multiphysics software.
Use a fore mentioned modeling techniques to provide guidance to technology development, especially in early stages when we don’t have experimental data, speed up the technology development process, answer questions that cannot be answered, experimentally, understand and explain unexpected experimental results.
Perform data analysis from experiments to develop and validate computational models.
Collaborate and interact with managers, co-workers, process engineers, and operations staff rather than isolating yourself from the team. Learn from others and let them learn from you by regularly interacting with them.
Observe equipment and operations in-person to get a hands-on understanding of the processes.
Coordinate work with CAD designers in the iterative engineering process to find the efficient design as quickly as possible.
Write technical reports and present findings of your modeling work to the broader team. Seek out peer review of your work as a key step in the validation process.
Speak up when key decisions are being made on which you have subject matter expertise.
What You Bring
PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
Strong grasp of physical laws and numerical methods used in Multiphysics modeling.
Experience with: Single-phase flow, RANS turbulence, and heat transfer (conduction, convection, radiation) and at least one additional physics domain (e.g., species transport, electrochemical systems, multiphase flow, MHD, structural analysis).
4+ years of experience (academic or professional) using tools such as COMSOL, Fluent, Star-CCM+, or OpenFOAM.
Excellent communication, collaboration, and time management skills.
Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and in teams.
Preferred Qualifications
2–4 years of post-PhD experience in Multiphysics modeling.
Proficiency in three or more advanced physics domains.
Demonstrated ability to derive and solve partial differential equations for real-world applications.
Experience interpreting experimental data and integrating it into modeling workflows.
What Alcoa Offers:
Competitive packages, including variable pay, recognition programs, and stock-based awards.
Flexible spending accounts, HSA contributions, 401(k) match, retirement income contributions, and more.
10 holidays, one flexible holiday, and paid volunteer hours.
Named one of America’s Greatest Workplaces 2023 by Newsweek.

About the Location
Every day is a new and exciting challenge at the Alcoa Technical Center in New Kensington, PA, just north of Pittsburgh. We develop new technologies with our Breakthrough Technologies team that has the potential to impact the life of millions of people and foster the sustainable footprint from Alcoa to the world. It was here where we developed the technology recently announced in partnership with Rio Tinto, called ELYSIS™, where we will produce aluminum with ZERO emission of greenhouse gases. In fact, we will actually be generating oxygen to our atmosphere during the aluminum production process– a revolution to the aluminum industry!
We are values led, vision driven and united by our purpose of transforming raw potential into real progress.
