The Ohio Attorney General’s Office is currently seeking an experienced, licensed attorney with a passion for public service, demonstrated commitment to protecting the rule of law, and an ability to effectively manage legal staff in a team environment to serve as the Assistant Section Chief of our Education Section. This position will work a hybrid remote/in-office schedule. There may be changes to this schedule based on training and operational needs. The headquarter location is 30 E. Broad Street Columbus, Ohio.

The successful candidate will assist the Section Chief with day-to-day operations including but not limited to providing advice and guidance to clients, Assistant Attorneys General and support staff. The Assistant Section Chief is a working litigator who possesses the experience, skills and knowledge to act as the lead counsel for a team of AAGs in higher profile, complex and fast paced matters in both federal and state courts. The Assistant Section Chief is also responsible for supervision of the support staff, to include paralegals, secretaries, and clerks. The successful candidate will also possess the ability and desire to both collaborate with and manage AAGs and support staff in a collegial environment.

The Education Section:

-Represents Ohio’s 14 universities and 23 two-year state community colleges, community colleges and technical colleges. This representation involves coordination of the work of in-house attorneys who handle the day-to-day work for the colleges and universities. The representation also includes working with and overseeing the special counsel.

-Provides advice and training on issues relating to higher education, including employment, state contracts, student privacy and discipline.

-Represents the colleges and universities in federal and state courts as well as in administrative matters.

-Handles litigation in federal and state courts and administrative hearings related to Ohio’s community schools (charter schools), special education services, educator discipline and licensure, territory transfer, transportation, child nutrition and public records.

Licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio pursuant to Section 4705.01 of the Ohio Revised Code.

Preferred qualifications:

At least 7 years of experience working as an attorney; and

Licensed in federal court
