The National Science Foundation (NSF) Harnessing the Data Revolution (HDR) Imageomics Institute is seeking to hire a Research Technician 1 to provide algorithm development assistance for key NSF grant and sub-grant activities within the Institute. This position will report to the Imageomics Institute’s Managing Director and work under the direction of Dr. Wei-Lun Chao and Dr. Jianyang Gu. This position works closely with the Imageomics team to assist with the collecting, generating, and cleaning data for advancing the Imageomics team’s computer vision and deep learning algorithms. This position will also work closely with the Institute’s Research Software Engineer and Senior Data Scientist to provide code-writing support on key infrastructure advancement projects.

As a part of the position, the successful applicant will assist with data collection, cleaning, and efficient labeling, with the goal that the data will be used to advance algorithms for visual recognition, understanding, and interpretation. These algorithms will be used to prepare training data and advance the capabilities for the next generation of Imageomics foundation models (e.g., BioCLIP v2) to facilitate AI for science.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to interact with and learn from a diverse group of researchers in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, and Biology, and advance their collaborative algorithm development capacity to translate theory into practical applications. In addition, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to assist in preparing manuscripts summarizing the research results.

The Imageomics Institute is a National Science Foundation (NSF) Harnessing the Data Revolution (HDR) Institute established to create machine learning tools using publicly funded collections of digital image data from national centers, field stations, museums and individual laboratories that will enable scientists to study how function follows form in all areas of biology and expand public understanding of the rules of Life on Earth and how it evolves.

Qualifications

Required:

High School graduate or Associate Degree required. 0-1 years of relevant experience required.

0-1 years of programming experience

Proficient in Python and PyTorch

Familiarity with git version control

Advanced understanding and relevant experience of computer vision and deep learning

Desired:

2 years of experience programming with Python and PyTorch

Knowledge of R and JavaScript

Familiarity with Hugging Face, Docker

Database experience

Awareness of FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) principles in data research products

Advanced understanding and relevant experience of AI for biology and/or ecology

Additional Information:

The target hiring range for this job profile is $15.00 - $19.71 per hour, paid biweekly. The actual salary paid to an individual will vary based on multiple factors, including but not limit to, education, years of experience, internal equity, etc.
