Job Title:

Instructional Design Manager

Department:

Ohio State Online Distance Education

Our goal is to foster a community of professionals with diverse skills, experiences, and backgrounds who actively collaborate to support the Ohio State University mission. We are committed to individual personal and professional growth to achieve their highest potential and support others along the way. In an ever-changing higher education landscape, our employees are flexible, innovative, and adept at developing solutions. The goal of this position is to create technology-empowered learning opportunities and evidence-based programs, courses, and support services consistent with the University’s academic plan. This is an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of shaping online program education for one of the largest and best-ranked land-grant universities. This role will help shape how Ohio State delivers education and will impact the world of learners. Reporting to the Director of Instructional Strategy and Design, the Instructional Design Manager provides management for the critical course design work that supports and advances the university’s strategic goals for online programs and Professional and Continuing Education (PCE).

The Instructional Design Manager will lead a specified team of instructional designers to provide consultation and support for instructors teaching in the university’s fully online programs and PCE portfolio for online course design and course revision. This role will be a partner in managing the portfolio of projects each semester that span programs across the university: assigning instructional designers to work with each Ohio State faculty member, and providing direction and coaching to IDs toward successful consultations and courses that meet the university’s online course quality standards.

Beyond the course project portfolio, this role also interacts with academic program leaders to advance program instructional and curricular strategies that support online working-adult student enrollment and success.

This role engages staff and peers in the creation and ongoing improvement of faculty professional learning opportunities to complement Ohio State Online’s high-touch ID and LXD support.

This position, in the spirit of continual improvement and agile work, will contribute to refining and implementing the team’s work systems and advancing a vision of instructional design as a critical academic function, based on stakeholder feedback, learning analytics and business data, and engagement with professional organizations and emerging knowledge and expertise.

This position also includes responsibility for the ongoing professional learning of team members toward core job competencies as well as evolution of skills and knowledge in the changing environment of higher education and technology.

Supervisory responsibilities: 5 total staff (may fluctuate depending upon need)

Required Education: Bachelor's degree.

Required Experience: 5 years of relevant experience required in Higher Education, strategic initiatives, instructional design, faculty development, teaching and learning, 3-5 years of management experience in an instructional design or faculty development setting

Desired Education: Master's degree in education or equivalent experience in evidence-based teaching principles

Desired Experience: At least 3 years of experience in faculty development and self-efficacy related to online instruction; at least 3 years of experience with curriculum design and assessment

Additional Information:

60% Instructional designer supervision: Provide day-to-day guidance, direction, and prioritization for a team of Instructional Designer direct reports collaborating with faculty across Ohio State’s institutional portfolio of online degree programs and certificates. Maintain oversight of team members’ course project milestones, execution of team processes, and effective collaboration with ID and LXD teammates and instructors. Engage regularly with other ID and Learning Experience Design team leaders as a coordinated operational management team to escalate project obstacles, opportunities, and constraints. Participate in project scheduling and staff assignments each semester, and support the full lifecycle of instructor engagement, including intake, hand-off, and post-delivery conversations. Support direct reports’ continual improvement via ongoing performance management, including coaching and feedback related to consultation skills, course design principles, project management, and other core role responsibilities. Identify and support appropriate professional development goals and connect team members to opportunities to contribute and grow their skills. Onboard new employees. Promote engagement, collaboration, shared values, and sustainable work-life balance in a remote/hybrid team context

20% Support for online program strategy consultation: In collaboration with the Director of Program and Course Design and other team leaders, support the organization’s strategic engagement with college program partners. Consult with program leaders on key strategies for success and enrollment of working-adult online students. Leverage expertise and institutional context to engage in OLI strategic initiatives and institutional partnerships that support Ohio State Online’s priorities.

20% Coordinate pathways for faculty professional learning: Contribute leadership, expertise, and organization to the development and ongoing improvement of faculty professional learning opportunities and engagement to complement the high-touch ID and LXD supports.
