ORGANIZATION SUMMARY STATEMENT

The Southern Management Leadership Program (SMLP) seeks a Graduate Assistant to support the program director and coordinator in two essential functions: (1) improving the study skills and academic performance of current SMLP students and (2) managing and analyzing SMLP data.

SMLP is a unique program that supports talented transfer students from 2 local community colleges to become ethical and entrepreneurial leaders. Upon enrollment at UMD the students receive scholarship funds, personalized mentoring support, and specialized courses to earn a minor in Technology Entrepreneurship and Corporate Innovation. The mission of the Southern Management Leadership Program is to support, develop, and graduate ethical leaders who want to energize and give back to their local communities. Details of this program are available at

Founded in 1856, University of Maryland, College Park is the state’s flagship institution. Our 1,250-acre College Park campus is just minutes away from Washington, D.C., and the nexus of the nation’s legislative, executive, and judicial centers of power. This unique proximity to business and technology leaders, federal departments and agencies, and a myriad of research entities, embassies, think tanks, cultural centers, and non-profit organizations is simply unparalleled. Synergistic opportunities for our faculty and students abound and are virtually limitless in the nation’s capital and surrounding areas. The University is committed to attracting and retaining outstanding and diverse faculty and staff that will enhance our stature of preeminence in our three missions of teaching, scholarship, and full engagement in our community, the state of Maryland, and in the world.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Graduate Assistant will have two main responsibilities throughout their appointment with SMLP. The first is to ensure current student success. This will include regular meetings with students to help them create habits for academic success and leading study skills workshops. Depending on the GA’s area of study, meetings with students may also include subject-specific tutoring. For example, if the GA is studying mathematics, they may tutor some students who are struggling with their math courses, in addition to meeting with students to help keep them on track with other subjects. The second responsibility is to manage and deploy SMLP data. The primary task within that responsibility is to maintain and suggest use cases for SMLP’s Airtable database that was created to better capture and deploy 17+ years of SMLP alumni data. Additional data analysis projects will also be part of the GA’s role, but nothing that will require prior data analysis experience.

The Graduate Assistant will also support the team in planning and executing program workshops and other events. This is a 9.5 month full Graduate Assistantship (20 hrs/week). The program has office space in Marie Mount Hall, and work will take place in a hybrid environment.

Position start date will be August 18, 2025.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBLITIES

1. Supporting and Tutoring Students (50%): meet regularly with current SMLP students and help them create habits for academic success. Tutor students in your area of study, if applicable. Lead study skills workshops and support SMLP students as they adjust to the UMD academic load. Help them stay on track to earn the minor in Technology Entrepreneurship and Corporate Innovation and graduate in a timely fashion in their major.

2. Data Management and Engagement (30%): follow instructions and guidelines to maintain and improve the SMLP alumni database in Airtable. Devise strategies to engage 17+ years of SMLP alumni, capture their updated data, and enable current students to contact alumni directly for personal and professional support. Compile statistics and prepare reports for program evaluation, compliance, and survey purposes. Maintain confidentiality and discretion with all data as required by UMD policy.
