The mission of the Parks and Recreation Department is to provide diverse open space, park, beach and community forest resources, and to enrich people's lives through a broad array of recreation and community services.
The Department manages 1,810 acres of parkland encompassing 60 developed and open space parks, beaches, recreation and sports facilities, as well as the City's urban forest, and parkways and medians programs.
THEPOSITION The City of Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Departmentis seeking two (2) Parks Supervisorpositions.Incumbents will supervise, assign, review and participate in the work of staff responsible for providing park maintenance and construction services including the maintenance and repair of municipal park grounds, beaches, golf courses, and recreation facilities; to manage construction and maintenance contracts, to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
Specific workgroup assignments may include: * Beach and Waterfront: maintenance of highly trafficked parks and beaches in and around the City's waterfront area.
* Downtown: maintenance of highly trafficked parks and City facility sites, including garden and horticultural management of the Mission Rose Garden and Alice Keck Park Memorial Garden * Riveria: maintenance of easternmost park sites as well as maintenance of Sheffield Reservoir * Northside: maintenance of northernmost park sites * Community Centers and Community Gardens: maintenance of community gardens and community center grounds * Open Space: maintenance of city open space sites, trails, annual vegetative fuel reduction requirements, and coordination for contracted and volunteer activities in open spaces * Equipment Operators: management of the equipment operating crew which includes turf renovations, mechanical beach grooming, and other tasks requiring use of heavy equipment BENEFITS: To view our benefits pageclick here.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS Knowledge of: * Operations, services and activities of a municipal park grounds and facilities maintenance and repair program.
* Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation.
* Materials, methods, practices and equipment used in municipal park facilities maintenance and repair activities.
* Methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in park grounds maintenance projects.
Principles and practices of ornamental horticulture.
* Planting mixtures and fertilization requirements.
* Plant pests and diseases, and methods of their control and eradication.
* Chemicals and sprays commonly used for plant and grounds care and their proper application.
* Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the work.
* Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations.
* Administrative and departmental policies and procedures.
Ability to: * Supervise, organize, and review the work of lower level staff.
* Select, supervise, train and evaluate staff.
* Read and interpret landscape and irrigation design plans.
* Interpret and apply administrative and departmental policies and procedures.
* Prepare clear and concise reports.
* Organize, direct and implement maintenance schedules.
* Operate and maintain municipal park facilities maintenance.
* Coordinate and compile information and statistics into complete records and reports.
* Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals.
* Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
* Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
* Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience: Four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of municipal park grounds and facilities including one year of administrative and supervisory responsibility.
Education and/or Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized course work in grounds maintenance or a related field.
License, Certificate and/or Other Requirements: Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license.
