Job Description:

Lower.com (headquartered in Columbus, Ohio) is an AI-driven digital mortgage lender that leverages cutting-edge technology to simplify the homebuying experience. As a Data Engineering Intern, you will help turn our data into actionable insights that drive decisions across the business. This full-time, paid internship is on-site (working hours aligned to the New York/Eastern time zone) and offers a unique opportunity to contribute to real projects from day one.

In this role, you’ll assist our Data Engineering team in building out business intelligence and data visualization solutions that power our internal analytics. You’ll improve and enrich our existing datasets – cleaning up outdated or unused data, refining data models, and ensuring our data is reliable and ready for analysis. Working closely with experienced data engineers, you’ll collaborate on projects but also take ownership of independent tasks, striking a balance between teamwork and autonomy.

We pride ourselves on a supportive, mentorship-focused environment. At Lower, the people, the culture, and the opportunity set us apart, – you’ll be welcomed into a small, fast-moving team that celebrates learning and growth. Expect one-on-one guidance, regular check-ins, and the freedom to make meaningful contributions. High-performing interns may even earn a fulltime offer at the end of the program, as we view our internship as a pathway to hiring future team members.

What You’ll Do

Build BI Dashboards: Assist in creating and enhancing interactive dashboards and reports to help teams make data-driven decisions.

Data Cleaning & Enrichment: Clean, transform, and enrich data in our warehouses removing outdated data, fixing data quality issues, and making sure new information is accurate.

Optimize Data Pipelines: Work with the team to improve data pipelines and workflows so that data flows smoothly from our sources to our analytics tools.

Collaborate with Team & Stakeholders: Partner with Data Engineers and analysts to understand data needs, brainstorm solutions, and deliver results. You’ll also occasionally interact with business stakeholders to ensure dashboards and data products meet their needs.

Independent Projects: Take ownership of mini-projects – for example, researching a new tool, prototyping a data model, or finding insights in the data – and drive them to completion with guidance from your mentors.

Documentation & Learning: Document your work and learnings to contribute to team knowledge. Continuously learn and experiment with new techniques or tools that can improve our data platform.

What We’re Looking For

Current Student: Must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program (Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, or related field). This internship is designed for students – recent grads should check our entry-level roles instead.

Eager Learner in a Fast-Paced Team: Enthusiastic about learning new technologies and concepts. Comfortable working in a fast-moving, small team environment where everyone wears multiple hats and responsibilities can be broad.

Self-Motivated & Driven: A self-starter who can work independently when needed. You take initiative, solve problems proactively, and have the drive to see projects through with minimal hand-holding.

Analytical Mindset: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with keen attention to detail. You enjoy digging into data to find issues or insights, and you care about getting things right.

Tech Familiarity (or Willingness to Learn): Exposure to databases, coding, and ETL tools is a plus. We use tools like Snowflake, dbt, Python, and GitHub for our data work – you don’t need to be an expert in them, but familiarity with any of these (or similar tools) will help you ramp up faster.

BI/Visualization Interest: Experience with or interest in business intelligence tools (Domo, Power BI, or similar) is highly beneficial. You should be excited about presenting data in clear, visual ways to end users.

Collaborative Communicator: Excellent teamwork and communication skills. You ask questions, listen well, and aren’t afraid to share ideas. Being able to explain your thoughts and work with others is key in our collaborative culture.

Tech You’ll Use

You’ll get hands-on experience with a modern data stack and analytics tools, including:

Snowflake – Cloud-based data warehouse for storing and querying large datasets

dbt (Data Build Tool) – Analytics engineering tool for transforming and modeling data

Python – Scripting language for data processing and automation tasks

GitHub – Version control and collaboration platform for our code and data projects

Domo – Cloud-based business intelligence (BI) platform for dashboards and reporting

Microsoft Power BI – Data visualization and BI tool for creating interactive reports

Perks & Benefits

Hands-On Mentorship: You’ll be paired with seasoned data engineers who will mentor you through code reviews, weekly check-ins, and continuous feedback. Our team is invested in helping you learn and succeed.

Real-World Experience: This isn’t a coffee-fetching internship – you will work on live projects using production data and modern tools. The experience you gain (Snowflake, dbt, etc.) will be highly marketable and relevant to today’s data engineering roles.

Impactful Work: The solutions you build – from dashboards for executives to cleaned up datasets for analysis – will directly influence business decisions and operations. Your work will be noticed and valued across the company.

Path to Full-Time Employment: We treat our internship program as a talent pipeline. Prove yourself, and there’s a strong chance of landing a full-time position at Lower upon graduation. (Many past interns have joined us permanently after proving their skills and fit).

Collaborative Culture: Work in an environment that’s supportive, fun, and aligned with a meaningful mission. You’ll form relationships that go beyond the office and be part of a team that celebrates wins and learns together Lower is a locally and nationally recognized “best place to work”, and we deeply value growth and promotion from within.

Competitive Pay: This is a paid internship. We want to ensure you can focus on learning and contributing, not worrying about finances.
