Position OverviewThe Murphy Art & Architecture Library, located on the first level of the Spencer Museum of Art, supports the teaching and research programs in the Departments of Art, Design, History of Art, Architecture, Urban Planning, and the collections of the Art Museum. The library's collection of more than 170,000 volumes documents the visual arts worldwide and from all ages. The collection offers visual and textual information in a variety of formats. Special strengths of the collection include art and architecture of the 19th through 21st centuries, architectural design, American art, East Asian art, Netherlandish art of the 16th and 17th centuries, plus the history and techniques of crafts such as ceramics, textiles, metalsmithing/jewelry.Job Description

20% - Provide helpful and friendly assistance to library users in a variety of ways including in-person, telephone, and by email.

20% - Check out and return books, periodicals, and other library materials.

15% - Perform variety of collection maintenance duties including shelving and lifting.

10% - Make referrals to library faculty and staff when appropriate.

10% - Answer library user questions and provide general information, directional guidance, and referrals to University sources using appropriate library resources and the Internet.

10% - Assist users with and maintain library equipment.

10% - Work independently of supervision when necessary.

5% - Other related duties as assigned.Required Qualifications

Must maintain assigned work schedule as expressed and agreed to in application materials.

Must commit to ongoing training in addition to work schedule as expressed and agreed to in application materials.

Must be able to maneuver heavy book truck (50 lbs. or more) with or without accommodation.Preferred Qualifications

Basic knowledge of art, architecture, and/or design as evidenced in application material.

Experience working in a team environment, as demonstrated in application material.

Previous work experience that required providing customer service to library users, as evidenced in application materials.

Recent public service work and/or volunteer experience as evidenced in application materials.

Library work experience and/or familiarity with KU Libraries as a user as evidenced in application materials.

Work experience that required computer and research skills with Voyager library system, database and web-searching and word processing, as evidenced in application materials.

Work study eligibility.

Availability to work all year including breaks.

Coursework or work experience that demonstrates knowledge of the Library of Congress classification system.

Reading knowledge in one of the following languages: German, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Korean or Chinese. Position RequirementsDuring the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).Employment Conditions(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.
