Job Title: Data Engineer

Reporting Relationship: Data Officer

Unit: Central Administration

Department: IT - Central Administration

Campus Location: Hybrid Schedule (3-4 days onsite in Marion, IN & 1-2 days remote)

Summary of Position: Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU) seeks a forward-thinking professional to play a foundational role in transforming how the institution leverages data-driven insights to enhance our services and drive innovation. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in data engineering, with experience in building and optimizing data pipelines, architectures, and data sets. The Data Engineer will play a crucial role in ensuring the availability, reliability, and efficiency of our data systems and will serve as an important catalyst in changing the very foundation of how IWU attracts, engages, and retains students through the effective use and governance of data, analytics, and business tools. The Data Engineer will be on the forefront of IWU’s data ecosystem transformation project, enhancing IWU’s capabilities to use information as an asset in our mission to transform lives through education.

Duties and Responsibilities

Design, develop, and maintain scalable data pipelines and ETL processes to support data access for reporting and analytics

Design and implement effective database solutions and models to store and retrieve company data

Migrate data from legacy systems to new solution(s)

Collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and other stakeholders to understand data requirements and deliver high-quality data solutions

Optimize and enhance data architectures to improve data quality, accessibility, and performance

Partner with Data Officer in implementing data governance and security measures to ensure data integrity and compliance with industry standards

Monitor and troubleshoot data pipeline performance, identifying and resolving issues proactively

Engage in continuous learning and professional development, staying up-to-date with emerging technologies and industry trends to continuously improve data engineering practices

Education

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field

Master's degree in a related field (preferred, not required)

Experience

Proven experience as a Data Engineer or a similar role

Experience with big data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Spark, Kafka) and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud)

Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI)

Knowledge of data mining and segmentation techniques

Required Skills

Strong proficiency in SQL and experience with database management systems (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle)

Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, or Scala

Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail

Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
