Position Summary

Legal Aid of Nebraska is seeking a dynamic and strategic Development Director to lead and execute a comprehensive fundraising and communications strategy. This role will collaborate closely with the Executive Director and other organizational leaders to ensure a robust development program that includes individual and corporate giving, foundation support, planned giving, and effective public relations. The Development Director will oversee development operations, manage contractor relationships, and supervise grant staff to ensure alignment with Legal Aid of Nebraska’s mission and goals.

Key Responsibilities

Fundraising Strategy & Implementation

Partner with the Executive Director to develop, implement, and manage an annual fundraising strategy to increase support from individuals, corporations, law firms, foundations and planned giving donors.

Cultivate, solicit, and steward major donors and prospects, building strong and lasting relationships with stakeholders.

Coordinate with the grant writing contractor to prioritize opportunities, ensure timely submissions, and align proposals with the organization’s mission and strategic direction.

Supervise the Grant Manager to ensure compliance, reporting, and outcomes tracking for all awarded grants.

Track and analyze key fundraising metrics and trends; prepare regular reports for the Executive Director and Board.

Communications and Marketing

Collaborate with the Manager of Marketing and Communications to develop and execute a strategic marketing and communications plan that enhances the organization’s visibility and supports fundraising goals.

Collaborate with the Manager of Marketing and Communications on creative direction and execution of internal and external marketing collateral, including the annual report, program brochures, event materials, and digital content.

Ensure consistent and compelling messaging across all platforms (website, email, social media, press releases, etc.).

Serve as an ambassador and spokesperson when needed, representing the organization at events and in the media.

Leadership & Team Management

Provide direction and support to the development and communications teams, fostering a collaborative, goal-oriented work environment.

Work cross-functionally with program leaders and finance staff to align fundraising initiatives with organizational priorities and budget needs.

Coordinate with Board members and fundraising volunteers to enhance engagement and outreach efforts.

Requirements:

Basic Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree or CFRE certification preferred.

Minimum of 5–7 years of progressively responsible experience in nonprofit fundraising, including major gifts, annual campaigns, and grant management.

Preferred Requirements:

Demonstrated success in developing and managing fundraising strategies across multiple donor segments.

Strong leadership and interpersonal skills; proven ability to manage and inspire teams and collaborate with senior leadership.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Experience in marketing, public relations, or communications highly desirable.

Proficiency in donor management systems (e.g., Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge preferred) and Microsoft Office Suite.
