WORK LOCATION: Wayne County Healthy Community - Hamtramck, MI 48212

POSITION SUMMARY: The Medical Assistant is responsible for a variety of medical related tasks in support of the work of the Physician and Physician Extender (PA, NP). These duties include preparation of exam rooms, electronically updating patient charts, preparing patient for visit with provider, taking and documenting vitals, assisting with exams, assisting with procedures, follow-up with patients providing instructions and education to patients, maintenance of logs, processing orders from the provider, inputting results of tests and labs in charts, making referrals providing and documenting immunizations and other duties as assigned by the Physician Extender and Medical practitioners.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Prepare patients for exams, including rooming, taking vital signs, obtaining medical history, and identifying chief complaints.

Assist providers with exams, procedures, and treatments (e.g., suture removal, ear lavage).

Administer immunizations, injections, & therapeutic treatments; document accordingly in patient records & immunization logs.

Perform point-of-care testing (e.g., glucose, urine, EKGs) and document results accurately.

Identify and report abnormal findings to providers promptly.

Answer phone calls and respond to patient inquiries with professionalism and confidentiality.

Clean and prepare exam rooms before and after each visit; restock supplies and ensure equipment is sanitized in accordance with infection control & OSHA standards.

Monitor vaccine refrigerator temperatures and maintain logs to ensure compliance with VFC and clinic protocols.

Ensure safe disposal of biohazardous waste and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Maintain accurate and timely charting in the EHR system, including patient history, procedures, immunizations, labs, & referrals

Support providers in completing superbills, ensuring accurate documentation of diagnoses & services for billing & compliance

Input lab/test results and coordinate follow-up tasks, such as patient notifications and referral submissions.

Assist with front office duties as needed, including appointment scheduling, patient check-in, and insurance verification.

Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by providers or clinic leadership to support the health center's mission and administrative needs.

Travel, & Flexibility:

Demonstrate flexibility by traveling between clinic sites to provide coverage as needed

Able to travel to required trainings

Proficient in using electronic medical records (EMR) systems, including documentation and data entry.

Understands and applies medical terminology accurately.

Demonstrates proper use, maintenance, and sterilization of medical equipment and instruments.

Skilled in performing routine clinical tasks including vitals, lab tests, immunizations, and basic procedures.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma

One (1) year experience in a healthcare environment

One (1) year experience providing office reception services

Current Medical Assistant certification (CMA) is preferred, but not mandatory

Salary: $16 - $20 hourly (based on certificate & experience)
