Mechanical Designer Drafter – Contract-to-Hire

Location: Newport News, VA

Pay Rate: $25.00- $35.00

Overview:

TriMech is seeking a skilled Mechanical Designer Drafter to support engineering efforts related to FAA-certified aircraft modifications and new product development. This contract-to-hire opportunity is based in Newport News, VA, and will be part of a dynamic engineering team working on advanced aviation platforms, including military and VIP aircraft.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in mechanical design using SOLIDWORKS and experience creating technical documentation for airworthiness compliance under FAA and military standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Design mechanical components, assemblies, and systems using SOLIDWORKS

Produce detailed 3D models and engineering drawings (parts, assemblies, BOMs)

Sheet metal experience in SOLIDWORKS

Ensure designs comply with ASME Y14.5, FAA regulations (14 CFR), and project specifications

Collaborate with cross-functional teams (electrical, software, systems) for integrated solutions

Interface with manufacturing to ensure design feasibility and production readiness

Support FAA certification efforts, including STCs, Form 337, and compliance documentation

Participate in design reviews, and assist in structural/thermal analyses as needed

Maintain strong configuration management and document control practices

Required Qualifications:

U.S. Citizenship required

Able to work in aircraft hangar and flight line environments, including confined spaces

3+ years of experience with SOLIDWORKS in a mechanical design role

Proficiency in creating detailed engineering drawings and managing CAD files

Familiarity with FAA compliance standards, airworthiness processes, and technical documentation

Solid understanding of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word)

Detail-oriented, safety-focused, and collaborative team player

Preferred Qualifications:

CSWP certification or 5+ years of SOLIDWORKS experience

Aviation or aircraft design background (3+ years preferred)

Experience with FAA and/or military certification standards (e.g., MIL-HDBK-516C)

Strong technical writing skills for engineering documentation
