Job Title: Internal Control Specialist
Department: Accounting/Finance
Reports To: Director of Internal Control, Logistics, and Distribution
General Description: The Internal Control Specialist is responsible for monitoring, auditing, and enhancing the integrity of the company's operational and financial controls. This position ensures that internal procedures and compliance measures are followed to reduce loss, mitigate risk, and improve accuracy across inventory and purchasing systems. The role supports audits, reconciliations, policy development, and control improvement initiatives.
Essential Job Functions include the following, other activities may be assigned:
Daily
- Perform stock receipt corrections via email and SharePoint.
- Reconcile 1251 inventory discrepancies.
- Review 4515 variance transactions and 4710 adjustment entries.
Weekly
- Review *99 transactions for irregularities.
- Audit items invoiced below $0.01.
- Review MOLT credit notes and known theft adjustments.
- Investigate 'Goods Paid Not Received' and pending stock information.
Monthly
- Maintain month-end inventory data logs.
- Clean up 13-month-old stock receipts and supplier returns.
- Conduct stock count audits.
- Reconcile 2032 accrued purchasing accounts.
- Investigate over/short activity in P&L accounts (e.g., 7550).
Yearly
- Monitor lumber commodity market impacts.
- Support external audit preparations and responses.
Physical Inventories
- Supervise and audit physical inventories: year-end, mid-year, management changes, and at distribution centers.
- Ensure integrity and compliance with inventory procedures.
Operational Audits & Control Development
- Perform 16 onsite audits per month from January–June, and 8 per month from July–September.
- Conduct audit follow-ups and document outcomes.
- Collaborate with Loss Prevention to develop and maintain internal control guides.
- Contribute to the monitoring and development of company policies.

Education and/or Experience
Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
2+ years of relevant audit, inventory control, compliance, or loss prevention experience preferred.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
Language Skills
Strong ability to read, interpret, and write reports, procedure manuals, and correspondences.
Effective communication skills, able to present confidently to both customers and employees.
Mathematical Skills
Strong mathematical aptitude, with the ability to calculate discounts, commissions, percentages, and other complex figures.
Familiarity with applying concepts of algebra and geometry to inventory processes.
Reasoning Ability
Demonstrated ability to apply logical thinking and problem-solving skills to practical situations involving multiple variables.
Computer Skills
Advanced proficiency with Inventory Management Software, Point of Sale systems, and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
