About the Role

Were hiring a Senior Audit Associate on behalf of our client, a reputable and growing CPA firm based in Islip, NY. This role is ideal for someone with strong audit experience in the education sector, particularly with New York State Education Department (SED) clients such as charter schools and special education providers. The right candidate will have a solid foundation in audit compliance and reporting, along with strong client communication and team leadership skills.

Key Responsibilities

Lead SED-focused audit engagements, ensuring compliance with New York State Education Department (NYSED) requirements

Conduct financial statement audits, compliance audits, and agreed-upon procedures for educational institutions

Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, including school administrators and board members

Plan and execute audits, including risk assessments, internal control evaluations, and substantive testing

Guide junior team members, review workpapers, and ensure audit quality and adherence to professional standards

Prepare or review financial statements, management letters, and SED-required filings

Stay current with SED regulations and government auditing standards (GAAS, GAAP, GAGAS)

Present audit findings to leadership and assist with final reporting

What Were Looking For

Masters degree in Accounting or 150 credit hours from an accredited institution

35 years of audit experience in public accounting, ideally with education or SED clients

CPA license preferred (or actively pursuing CPA designation)

Strong understanding of GAAP, GAAS, GAGAS, and NYSED reporting requirements

Experience with audit software (e.g., ProSystem fx Engagement) and proficiency in Excel and Word

Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills

Ability to manage multiple engagements and deadlines
