Description
The JSU Online Academic Advisor will support JSU Online students from initial enrollment through graduation by providing proactive academic advising and student support services. This position is key to ensuring students stay on track, meet academic requirements, and are engaged throughout their academic journey.
Examples of Duties
Advise students from Freshman to Senior level, including transfer students; provide support during nights and weekends during peak enrollment periods.
Process student pre-registration/registration schedules, add/drop requests, withdrawals, and change of major forms.
Monitor student academic progress systematically throughout the academic year.
Assist with the recruitment process, including identification, selection, admission, and registration of students.
Support planning, organization, and implementation of student orientation, assessment, and placement into appropriate curricula and courses.
Evaluate transcripts for incoming and continuing transfer students.
Meet regularly with students to review degree progress and ensure graduation requirements are met.
Track registration deadlines and ensure students register in a timely manner.
Evaluate and articulate transfer and AP courses to determine Jackson State University course equivalencies.
Create individualized action plans to help students meet academic and personal goals.
Develop and implement programs and strategies to improve student retention.
Assist in updating university programs and curricula as needed.
Conduct degree audits to verify academic completion.
Complete all required reports accurately and on time.
Attend unit meetings, programs, and events as required.
Serve on university and unit-level committees.
Performs additional duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree preferable in counseling, education, psychology, marketing, or related field.
One to three years of experience in academic advising, student support services, or related area within a higher education environment.
Knowledge of FERPA and other regulations related to student records.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work with diverse student population.
Organizational and time management skills.
Problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
Computer literacy, especially with advising software and learning management systems.
Ability to work independently as well with teams.
Positive and encouraging attitude to motivate student's success.
