Facilities Management Division:
The Mason II will be part of the Facilities Management Division. This Division of 118 staff provides for the care and maintenance of the Department’s physical assets including facilities, pavement, fleet, and major building systems. With a budget over $13 million dollars, the division is responsible for facility condition assessments, major and minor maintenance programs, and serves as the primary support to the Department’s Capital Improvement Projects (CIP). The division strives to achieve a balance between the upkeep of aging facilities and new construction by integrating a number of CIP and major maintenance projects into the daily work program each year.
The Masonry Shop consists of 5 masons engaged in park renovation and improvement projects such as installing sidewalks, parking spaces, pads, brick and block structures, headwalls, and storm boxes. They also create intricate paving details in parks and perform general maintenance work such as brick repair and replacement, block, and concrete work. Their preventative maintenance tasks include inspection of parks, parking lots and structures and point up masonry joints on structures.

Examples of Important Duties
Performing Skilled Concrete/Masonry Tasks
Modifies, repairs, and maintains brick, block, columns, or other concrete/masonry tasks as assigned.
Fabricates forms for sidewalks, footings, and foundations, per sketch or plans. Complying with ADA standards.
Mixes cements, concretes, or various bonding materials accurately, per specifications.
Installs assorted steel products such as lintels, beams, rebar, and mesh were installed accurately.
Installs various pavers, per plans or details accurately.
Repairs and installs various types of plaster, stucco, and related components.
Accurately measures, cuts, drills, and shapes various masonry products to complete assigned tasks.
Reads and comprehends blueprints, plans, drawings, and sketches when completing assigned tasks and projects.Administrative Related Tasks
Accurately completes work orders/requests and returns to supervisor on a daily basis.
Accurately completes purchasing documents, per division policy.
Promptly turns in materials received invoices to supervisor.
Assigns work to Trades Helpers and other Masons under their direction.
Estimates materials and tools needed for daily assignments.Important Skills and Characteristics
Skilled in the operation of concrete/masonry hand and power tools; light construction equipment, motor vehicles; and appropriate office equipment.
Ability to estimate time and materials.
Ability to calculate grades with a laser level. Preferred Qualifications
Extensive knowledge of standard masonry and concrete practices and methods.
Knowledge of Maryland Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), fire, and building codes.
Knowledge of geometry.
Understanding of confined space procedures and hazardous materials.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
Completion of an approved masonry apprentice program or four (4) years of progressively responsible experience.
Two (2) years of experience at the journey level.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total six (6) years.
Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's licenses must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of their position.
Depending on area of assignment, a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements may be required.
Pass Commission medical examination.
