Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for a permanent, full-time position of Relief Engineer/Deckhand Eligibility List with Ferry Services - Halifax Transit.

The Relief Engineer/Deckhand Eligibility List is administratively responsible to the Supervisors, Ferry Operations. While working on a vessel, the Engineer/Deckhand is functionally responsible to the Vessel’s Captain.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Engineer/Deckhand shall:

Conduct duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Ferry Operations Manual and the published ferry schedule.

Maintain machinery and machinery space cleanliness.

Maintain main cabin cleanliness, shovel snow from ferry upper decks and spread area as required to maintain safe conditions for passengers and crew.

Assist Ferry Crew members as directed by the Captain.

Operate overhead doors to facilitate the safe embarkation and disembarkation of passengers.

Perform duties in accordance with the Muster List for each ferry.

Perform duties in accordance with the Ferry Security Plan for each ferry.

Complete the Engine Room Log at the end of each watch with required information.

Reports any irregularities to the Captain and the Supervisors, Ferry Operations.

When assigned Relief status, assist with planned and corrective maintenance activities at the Woodside maintenance facility; in particular:

Paint ferry vessel interior and exterior surfaces.

Change belts, fluids and filters.

Conduct minor repairs.

Other duties as assigned by the Supervisors, Ferry Operations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.

Experience with and expertise with Caterpillar diesel engines, Twin Disc marine gearboxes, and Voith-Schneider propulsion units considered an asset.

Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:

Please note: All certificates must be recognized by Transport Canada

Small Vessel Machinery Operator Certificate or Higher.

Current Marine Medical.

Valid First Aid.

Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.

Please Note - Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates, who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer's discretion.

Please Note - Candidates will be required to provide proof of their valid certificates and licenses, per the educational technical qualifications, prior to being invited for an interview.

WORK STATUS: Permanent Full Time

HOURS OF WORK: Hours of work are full time as required by the shift schedule.

SALARY: As per ATU, Local 508 Collective Agreement.

WORK LOCATION: Halifax Transit Ferries: Alderney, Halifax and Woodside Ferry Terminals - Based on operational requirements, the work location and schedule are subject to change.
