Job Description

The Individual Giving Officer raises support for and advances United Way of Midland County's mission by sustaining and growing relationships, leading to leadership-level, major gifts, and planned giving through innovative relationship fundraising best practices. This position requires a high level of collaboration, expert-level understanding of United Way's work and issues within the community and proven sales skills. This role is responsible for implementing the donor development pipeline, employing lead generation and marketing communication strategies to cultivate lasting relationships and to financially engaging individuals in the work of United Way. The Officer is responsible and accountable for revenue generation through executing strategies to cultivate, steward and solicit donors throughout Midland County.

KEY ENGAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Develops, manages and maintains a portfolio of individual, major gifts and planned giving donors.

Develops and executes strategies to identify, research, cultivate and solicit qualified prospects for major and planned gifts in collaboration and cooperation with the Leadership Team, while maintaining current portfolio.

Updates skills regularly to enhance knowledge of major gifts and planned giving trends, best practices and tools. Identify creative and innovative tactics for growth in identified donor communities.

Responsible and accountable for establishing, overseeing and growing revenue from individual donors within Midland County.

Research, identify, cultivate and solicit new Individual Giving prospects while managing and prioritizing the current portfolio.

Oversee the development and implementation of stewardship strategies and activities, ensuring a tailored and engaging year-round experience for donors, volunteers and community members.

Manage ongoing donor and prospect relationships through regular contact, personal visits, communication and follow-up.

Consistently document key conversations and other pertinent donor information in donor management database.

Work with financial planners, estate attorneys and other volunteers to discuss gifting through many planned giving vehicles. Become a specialist in understanding financial tools to best suit donors.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.

5-7 years of documented professional experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Minimum of 1 to 3 years of fund development experience, preferably in Major Gifts and/or Planned Giving.

Proven and demonstrated sales experience with applied emphasis on customer relationship building.

Qualifications:

Extremely effective oral and written communication skills with an ability to relate with a diverse group of individuals.

Demonstrated ability to manage a portfolio of donor accounts.

Demonstrated ability to secure high-value donations from individuals, and other private funding sources.

Demonstrated ability to persuade others.

Strong ability to define and execute action plans.

Proven ability to take initiative, be creative in thinking and solutions.

Ability to understand complex organizations and systems and ability to work in harmony with peers, and as an active team member.

Ability to manage multiple projects with set deadlines/guidelines.

Experience with donor database preferred (Salesforce).

Communication skills and protocol are suitable for interfacing with major gift donors.

Experience in the Fund Development profession is preferred.

Specialized understanding in financial and/or estate planning and tax law preferred. Knowledge of and background in planned giving vehicles (i.e., bequests, annual trusts, unitrusts, giving through retirement plans, etc.), current trends in philanthropy, donor-advised funds and basic estate and financial planning for individuals, including tax implications of charitable giving.
