Working under the general direction of the Facilities manager and on-site maintenance technician, the Groundskeeper (Landscaper I) provides year-round care for county facility grounds, parking lots, and walkways. The role combines turf management, irrigation repair, seasonal clean-up, and snow removal to ensure safe, attractive, and well-maintained exterior spaces.
Responsibilities
Grounds Care – Mow, edge, rake, and aerate turf; plant, prune, and fertilize trees, shrubs, and flowers; apply herbicides and pesticides as directed.
Irrigation & Sprinklers – Install, inspect, repair, and winterize sprinkler systems; adjust watering schedules for seasonal efficiency.
Site Maintenance – Remove litter and debris; empty outdoor receptacles; pressure-wash or paint exterior surfaces as needed.
Snow & Ice Control – Plow, shovel, and apply ice-melt to sidewalks and parking areas during winter months.
Equipment Upkeep – Clean, service, and store mowers, trimmers, hand tools, and snow-removal equipment to ensure safe operation.
Safety & Inspections – Conduct routine site and equipment inspections; respond promptly to grounds-related emergencies and after-hours calls.
Displays & Seasonal Projects – Plan and install annual flowerbeds and seasonal decor.
Other Duties – Perform related tasks as assigned to support overall facility appearance and safety.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Basic knowledge of turf care, horticulture, and grounds-maintenance practices.
Experience operating mowers, trimmers, blowers, and irrigation systems.
Familiarity with safe handling of fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides.
Valid driver’s license to perform essential job responsibilities, such as driving university vehicles and transporting materials
Must have access to reliable transportation to and from work site
Preferred Qualifications:
High-school diploma or GED.
Prior commercial or municipal landscaping experience.
Basic small-engine or irrigation-system repair skills.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, work independently, and build positive working relationships.
