Project Automation Controls Engineer
Location: Danville, IL
Salary: $80,000-$120,000 + 10% bonus
About the Opportunity
A leading global manufacturer of advanced materials and building products is seeking an Project Automation Controls Engineer to join its high-performing team at a state-of-the-art facility in Danville, IL. This facility specializes in the production of wet-formed fiberglass mat used in roofing and other commercial applications.
As a key technical leader on site, you will provide support in automation, controls, electrical design, and network systems, while leading capital projects and continuous improvement initiatives. This is a high-impact role with potential for hybrid work flexibility based on plant needs and includes participation in an on-call production support rotation.

Key Responsibilities
Provide controls and automation support for plant production, packaging, and utility systems
Serve as lead technical resource for defect detection systems
Collaborate with corporate and plant engineering on automation projects
Drive safety, capital, and process improvement initiatives
Support maintenance teams in equipment troubleshooting and technology integration
Train plant personnel on new technologies and automation tools
Lead TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) initiatives and reliability work processes
Develop and manage preventive and predictive maintenance programs
Implement cost-saving and process optimization strategies
Ensure compliance with safety standards (OSHA, NFPA, ANSI)
Required Qualifications
5+ years of hands-on experience in automation control systems in a manufacturing environment
Expertise in controls design, PLC/HMI programming, and systems troubleshooting
Skills and Attributes
Strong troubleshooting, organizational, and communication skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel power user preferred)
Knowledge of TPM and maintenance best practices
Working knowledge of safety regulations and codes (OSHA, NFPA, ANSI)
Strategic thinker with a hands-on leadership style
Ability to mentor and train team members
Travel
