Academic Therapy Publications (ATP) is a special education publisher that develops assessments and readers for K-12 school market. For the past 60 years, its products are used by reading interventionists, classroom teachers, special education teachers, speech-language pathologists, school psychologists, occupational therapists and other professionals.

ATP's High Noon Books division (HighNoonBooks.com) is looking for a Senior Developmental Editor to work on production of high-interest, low readability (hi/lo) titles for struggling readers in grades K through 12. This is NOT an entry-level position. Required experience includes at least 5 years previous employment (editing and/or writing) for an educational publisher, either full time or dedicated freelance. Knowledge of books designed for students with reading disabilities is preferred.

This is a full time in-office position, on-site in Novato, CA. Freelance positions and remote work arrangements are not being considered currently.

The Senior Developmental Editor shepherds five-book sets of fiction and nonfiction from story idea to publication, with each manuscript running from 1,000 to 6,000 words, depending on level. This includes negotiating contracts and working with freelance writers, suggesting plot revisions, editing copy to a particular reading level (using Lexile and in-house leveling system), securing the services of illustrators, cover designers, and working with design and production staff. The Senior Development Editor works as part of a development team that may include specialists in assessment, reading development, marketing and other management staff. The work may involve developing story ideas, nonfiction subject matter, plots and characters, writing chapter outlines, as well as constructing timetables for book production process. Assist in development or review marketing collateral, ads, and social media posts. This position will require knowledge of High Noon Book's current offerings, and the ideal candidate should be available to attend national educational conferences.

Must-have qualifications:

Ability to adapt to Hi/Lo writing technique

Experience writing and/or content editing for the educational publishing industry

Ability to explain complex concepts in simple language, with simple sentence structure

Attention to detail

Strong knowledge of English grammar and spelling

Expertise in proofreading and copyediting

Ability to meet deadlines

Ability to work as a team

Pluses:

Hi/Lo writing or editing experience

Lower-elementary curriculum writing or editing

Elementary teaching experience

Experience working with freelance writers and editors

Familiarity with Dolch, Fry, or similar word lists
