PURPOSE: The Water Pollution Control Center Lead Operator oversees the operation, and maintenance of wastewater treatment plant process control, wastewater collection, and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.
This position performs skilled and manual labor and provides lead worker support.
Reports for duty in emergency situations and works a rotational on-call weekend and holiday schedule.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Provides hands-on instruction and direction to Operators in proper operations and maintenance procedures for both the plant and the collection system.
Provides field training and mentoring to Operators.
Promotes teamwork within the Operations section.
Collects representative wastewater and sludge samples and delivers to lab for analysis.
Collects operational data for transcription to reports and computer entry.
Assists in sampling equipment set-up and collecting of data for the Industrial Pretreatment Program.
Monitors WPCC processes and recommends changes to improve plant performance.
Oversees the collection system cleaning program and assures problem areas are addressed with accelerated cleaning schedules.
Inspects, cleans, paints, and maintains equipment, buildings, tanks, and high-pressure hoses.
Writes reports on daily plant performance and assists with data interpretation for daily plant control and long range planning.
Maintains records regarding daily plant performance.
Directs and performs preventative maintenance, assigns and completes work orders on plant and collection system equipment.
Performs routine maintenance of plant and collection controls, motors, pumps, treatment equipment, and collection system.
Performs minor mechanical repairs, and assists maintenance employees.
Promotes and maintains positive public relations with other City department staff and the community in general.
Responds or refers complaints to collection system emergency calls.

REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge equivalent to a high school diploma, prefer an Associate's or B.S.
Degree.
Commercial Driver's License (CDL) endorsement (Classes B,C,D, N) or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of appointment.
Advanced licensed Wastewater Operator by the Department of Natural Resources with subclasses A1-Advanced, B-Advanced, C-Advanced, D-Advanced, L-OIT and P-Advanced or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of appointment.
Knowledge and ability to operate motorized equipment and tools.
Available for call in during wet weather or emergencies.
Advanced knowledge of wastewater treatment equipment, operations, procedures and regulations.
Ability to troubleshoot and calibrate process control sensors.
Considerable knowledge of working hazards and safety precautions.
Ability to perform manual labor (bend, stoop, handle equipment, lift minimum of 60 pounds, push or pull objects weighing up to or excess of 100 pounds); withstand a variety of temperatures, weather and work conditions.
Strong mechanical aptitude and communication skills preferred.
Equivalent combinations of training and experience may be considered.
2025 SALARY RANGE: Pay Range 124: $34.08 - $38.97 per hour with excellent benefits.
