Job Summary:

The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood samples from patients for laboratory testing. The role requires the ability to properly identify patients, ensure a safe and comfortable experience for them, and follow proper procedures for blood collection, handling, and transport. The Phlebotomist also ensures compliance with health and safety regulations and maintains accurate documentation.

Key Responsibilities:

Blood Collection: Draw blood samples from patients using various techniques (e.g., venipuncture, capillary puncture) while ensuring patient comfort and safety.

Patient Identification: Verify patient identity before collecting samples to ensure accuracy and prevent errors.

Proper Sample Handling: Label and properly store blood samples to ensure they are prepared for laboratory testing.

Maintain Records: Accurately document all blood collection activities and maintain patient records in compliance with medical protocols and regulations.

Ensure Sterility: Follow proper sanitization and infection control protocols to maintain a sterile environment and prevent contamination.

Patient Interaction: Communicate with patients to explain the procedure, address concerns, and provide reassurance to reduce anxiety.

Inventory Management: Maintain and monitor inventory of phlebotomy supplies, ensuring equipment and materials are properly stocked and stored.

Health & Safety Compliance: Adhere to safety guidelines for bloodborne pathogens, disposal of needles, and handling hazardous materials.

Support Lab Operations: Assist laboratory personnel with sample transportation, documentation, and preparation for testing.

Required Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Certification from an accredited Phlebotomy program (e.g., PBT, CPT, or other relevant certifications).

Previous experience as a Phlebotomist or in a medical laboratory setting preferred but not required.

Skills:

Knowledge of venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques.

Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to handle stressful situations and provide compassionate care to patients.

Familiarity with health and safety regulations, especially regarding bloodborne pathogens.

Preferred Qualifications:

Certification from a nationally recognized phlebotomy organization (e.g., American Society for Clinical Pathology).

Experience working in a hospital or clinical laboratory setting.

Knowledge of laboratory procedures and medical terminology.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to stand for long periods and move around a hospital or laboratory environment.

Ability to lift and carry phlebotomy equipment and samples.

Ability to perform repetitive tasks, including drawing blood and labeling samples.

Ability to work in environments with varying levels of noise and temperature.
