The Billing Specialist reviews and carries out the insurance claim billing process for the organization, working with patients and carriers.
Salary begins at $18.23/hour depending on experience.
The Billing Specialist coordinates patient and insurance billings for the organization by performing the following duties:
Prepares, reviews and transmits claims using billing software, including electronic and paper claim processing
Reads and interprets insurance explanation of benefits
Posts manual and/or electronic remittance advices and patient payment
Timely follow up on insurance claim denials, appeals, exceptions or exclusions
Utilizes monthly aging accounts receivable reports to follow up on unpaid claims aged over 30 days
Contacts patients regarding outstanding balances
Establishes payment plans to help patients manage payment of bills
Sends delinquent accounts to collection agencies
Trains appropriate personnel on computerized billing system
Responds to patient billing and statement inquiries
Creates and mails insurance claims and patient statements
Makes recommendations to management for write-offs
Assists Manager/Supervisor with special projects as requested
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Education Requirements
Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Understanding of healthcare reimbursement practices strongly preferred.
Preferred Skills
Previous experience with EPIC electronic health record is preferred.
Prior FQHC experience preferred.
