Tenure faculty (regardless of rank) - persons with the titles of professor, associate professor, assistant professor and instructor who serve on appointments totaling 50% or more service to the university and who are eligible for tenure or who have obtained tenure. Duties and responsibilities are assigned in accordance with the workload guidelines laid out in the pattern of administration of each faculty member’s tenure initiation unit (TIU) and, as appropriate, regional campus; obligations will include research, service and/or teaching or clinical practice. These faculty will have earned doctorate or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study or possession of equivalent experience.

The Department of Astronomy at the Ohio State University announces an opening for a research faculty hire in X-ray observations and modeling of accretion flows and supermassive black holes. The appointment is effective in Autumn 2025 at the rank of Research Assistant Professor. We envision a candidate with demonstrated expertise in modeling the relativistic effects that govern time-dependent spectral energy distributions of black hole accretion disks,

applying these models to X-ray and multi-wavelength data to extract empirical constraints on accretion flow physics, and designing and executing observing programs for current and future X-ray observatories.

Successful candidates will be expected to:

1. Lead a vigorous research program in the observational study of black hole accretion flows using X-ray space telescopes and other observing facilities.

2. Develop and maintain financial support from external funding agencies.

3. Contribute to the intellectual vitality of the Department of Astronomy, including participation in department activities and supervision of research projects by students and postdocs.

4. Provide service to the department, college, and university as appropriate

for this position.

Minimum Education Required

Doctoral degree in Astrophysics or closely related field

Required Qualifications

We are seeking candidates with significant research experience in X-ray astronomy and the study of black hole accretion flows, with a strong publication record and experience in planning for future X-ray missions.
