Responsibilities

The Specialty Clinic Nurse – Surgery provides professional nursing care to patients within a surgical specialty clinic setting. This role involves pre-operative and post-operative patient education, coordination of surgical care, clinical support during procedures, and collaboration with surgeons and multidisciplinary teams. The nurse serves as a key point of contact for patients undergoing surgical interventions, ensuring a safe, efficient, and patient-centered experience.

Provide direct nursing care to patients in a surgical specialty clinic.

Perform pre-operative assessments and screenings, including medical history reviews and diagnostic testing coordination.

Educate patients and families on surgical procedures, pre- and post-operative instructions, and recovery expectations.

Assist in coordinating surgery schedules, including obtaining prior authorizations and pre-op clearances.

Monitor post-operative patients for complications, wound care, pain management, and follow-up needs.

Serve as a liaison between patients, surgeons, anesthesia providers, and clinic staff.

Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by the surgical team.

Document patient encounters and updates in the electronic medical record (EMR) system accurately and timely.

Participate in quality improvement initiatives and maintain compliance with infection control protocols and accreditation standards.

Support clinic operations, including triage, phone calls, scheduling, and supply management.

Qualifications

Education:

Graduate of an accredited nursing program; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

Licensure/Certification:

Must hold a current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Iowa.

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred.

Experience:

Minimum 2 years of nursing experience, preferably in a surgical, perioperative, or specialty clinic setting.

Experience with electronic health records (EHR/EMR) systems required; EPIC experience is a plus.
