We are seeking an experienced Interim Controller to support a fast-paced engineering firm during a period of operational transition and system improvements. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in professional services environments where time and materials are billed, such as architecture, engineering, or consulting firms.
This hands-on role will manage day-to-day accounting operations, oversee a small finance team, and support key initiatives, including a potential ERP system upgrade. The successful candidate will ensure financial accuracy, maintain internal controls, and provide reliable reporting to leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and month-end close
Manage and mentor a small accounting team
Ensure accurate project-based accounting for time and materials billing
Prepare and deliver monthly financial statements and management reports
Maintain compliance with GAAP and internal policies
Collaborate with project managers to ensure accurate job costing and budget tracking
Partner with leadership on forecasting, budgeting, and financial planning
Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy
Troubleshoot anomalies or inconsistencies in historical financial records if needed
Qualifications
Proven experience as a Controller or senior accounting leader in a professional services firm (engineering, architecture, consulting, etc.)
Expertise in time and materials billing environments
Deltek strongly preferred
Proficiency in GAAP, job costing, and project-based accounting
Strong leadership, communication, and analytical skills
Ability to work onsite and hit the ground running with minimal ramp-up
CPA preferred but not required
